Five Spartan wrestlers qualified for the state tournament this past weekend with a sixth making it as an alternate. This makes them in the top 16 wrestlers in the state at their weight class in AA. This was the most wrestlers we’ve taken to state in five years. Senior co-captain Andrew Deneen, junior Ben Hixson, and freshmen Locke Hoover and Travis Elrod all qualified for the first time while junior Mason Deal was in his second appearance at state. Several days before competition, Ben Hixson tore cartilage in his shoulder and was unable to compete at the tournament. All four wrestlers in the tournament won their first match and co-captain Mason Deal went on to take a fifth place medal at 119 lbs. at state over at the Gwinnett Arena. Mason joins other great Spartan wrestlers in placing at the state tournament and has plans to place even higher next season.
