COACH MIKE MITCHELL REPORTS:

The Lady Spartan basketball team had an exciting weekend of basketball in

the region 8-AA tournament. Friday night the girls came back from a 9 point

half-time deficit to defeat Buford for the 3rd time this year. It was a

great effort by everyone.

Saturday night in the region finals the Lady Spartans came from behind to

take a one point lead late in the game against Wesleyan but could not hold

on. As region runner-up we will host Oglethorpe County Saturday night at

7:00 in the Bradford gym.  This is the first round of state playoffs, and we

need everyone who is in town to come and support the Lady Spartans in their

quest for a state championship. Congratulate these girls on a great effort

this weekend and throughout the season.

Note: The admission to the game is $5.00. Only pass accepted is the GHSA

pass. The Spartan Booster Club card is NOT accepted.

WESLEYAN WINS REGION OVER GAC

By Larry Hartstein

Feb. 12 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Wesleyan won the past two Class AA titles without winning its region. This

time the Wolves are going to the state tournament as Region 8-AA champions.

In a thrilling final in the packed Providence Christian gym, the Wolves let

a 15-point second-half lead slip away before pulling out a 62-59 victory

over their Norcross rival, Greater Atlanta Christian.

The Spartans, who trailed 37-22 early in the third, grabbed a one-point lead

when D'Nay Daniels hit two free throws with 1:27 left in the game. GAC

forced a turnover, but Elise Whitney stole the ball back.

With 30 seconds to go, senior forward Lé Lé LeSeur drew a double-team inside

and rifled a pass to Carolyn Whitney in the deep right corner. The senior

point guard swished it for a 61-59 lead.

Daniels, who led all scorers with 21, fouled out on a charge on the next

possession. LeSeur made one of two free throws, and the Spartans failed to

get off a good 3-point try.

It was Wesleyan's sixth consecutive win over GAC, the third this season.

Wolves coach Jan Azar, visibly upset with her team's second-half turnovers,

credited LeSeur and the Whitney twins for steadying the team in the final

minute.

"They played like seniors at the end, and we've got to make sure they

continue to do that throughout the state tournament," Azar said.

Wesleyan's balance proved decisive. Elise Whitney scored 12, Sarah Delk 11,

Kelly Hall seven and Anne Marie Armstrong six. LeSeur had nine points and 12

rebounds. Carolyn Whitney had eight points and six assists.

"It's really hard to beat GAC because they're really competitive, but I

think we just wanted it more at the end," said Hall, who along with Elise

Whitney keyed the Wolves' pressure defense.

The Spartans (21-7) got 10 points from Julio Stephens and nine apiece from

Courtney Samuels and Kiki Swanier. Daniels, who sat long stretches with foul

trouble, had nine rebounds and three steals to go with her 21 points.

GAC could get a fourth crack at top-ranked Wesleyan if both advance to the

state title game.

CAROLYN WHITNEY'S 3 POINTER GIVES WESLEYAN 8-AA TITLE

By Haaris Quraishy, Staff Correspondent

Feb. 12 Gwinnett Daily Post

LILBURN — Carolyn Whitney went scoreless the entire second half until

Wesleyan needed a big basket.

The Georgia Southern signee then answered with one of the biggest shots of

her stellar career as Wesleyan won the Region 8-AA championship 62-59 over

Greater Atlanta Christian on Saturday.

With 1:26 left in the fourth quarter, and Wesleyan down 59-58, Whitney hit a

3-pointer that put Wesleyan up for good as she led the Wolves to the 8-AA

title.

“She is a great player,” Wesleyan girls coach Jan Azar said. “She has to,

and will play better. She is an amazing player. When she leads, we play

well.”

Both teams came out in the first period and shot well from the floor. GAC

scored all 14 points in the first quarter from inside the paint, while

Wesleyan used its up-tempo style of basketball to create easy baskets. Elise

Whitney had four steals and four assists in the first period, as she led the

Wolves to a 17-14 first quarter lead.

Elise Whitney finished the game with 12 points and seven steals.

Midway through the second quarter, Kelly Hall capped off Wesleyan run with

an NBA range 3-pointer to increase the lead to 30-19 at the half.

Hall started the second half hot, hitting another deep 3-pointer to give the

Wolves a 33-19 lead. But then GAC began to get its offense rolling.

With momentum clearly in the Spartans’ favor, GAC’s D’Nay Daniels took the

ball coast-to-coast and converted a three-point play with 5:32 left in the

third period, cutting the lead to seven.

Daniels finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds.

To begin the fourth quarter, Julio Stephens hit a turn-around jump shot that

made the score 47-42, then Sally Carroll hit a deep 3-pointer to cap off a

7-0 scoring run, making the game 47-44. Wesleyan’s Sarah Delk ended the GAC

run by converting a three-point play of her own. Delk finished the game with

11 points.

But GAC crawled its way back into the game and took a 58-57 lead on another

three-point play by Daniels with 2:16 left in the game. After trading

possessions, Wesleyan needed a basket, and with 1:26 left in the game,

Carolyn Whitney hit a 3-pointer from the baseline to give the Wolves a 60-58

lead.

The senior guard finished the game with 10 points and 11 assists.

With Wesleyan up by two, GAC sent LeLe LeSeur to the line and the Bucknell

signee calmly hit one of two free-throws, but Sally Carroll’s desperation

heave fell short and gave the Wolves the region championship.

LADY SPARTANS BEAT BUFORD IN REGION SEMIFINALS

By Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer

Feb. 11 Gwinnett Daily Post

LILBURN — Momentum and effort are two of the most important things in high

school basketball.

Greater Atlanta Christian got the better of both in the second half of

Friday’s 59-50 semifinal win over Buford and earned a spot in the Region

8-AA girls’ basketball finals.

The Spartans came into the second half trailing 31-22, but a 10-0 run to

start the third quarter gave them their first lead since the waning seconds

of the first quarter.

“It was really just our effort,” GAC head coach Mike Mitchell said of the

difference in the halves. “We just started playing as a team and playing

with heart out there and it paid off for us.”

Said Buford head coach Gene Durden, “We needed to do something good in the

first three minutes of the half, but a few things went wrong and we started

to drop our heads and it just went down from there.”

Keying the run for the Spartans (21-6) was junior forward D’Nay Daniels, who

had 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to help lead the rally.

Julio Stephens also had 15 points for GAC, while the Wolves were led by

Kelly Tucker’s 11 and had both Vicky and Shannon Wilson in double digits

with 10 each.

Daniels also led GAC in rebounding with 14 boards, an area that Mitchell was

pleased to have improved on since their last meeting with Buford (20-8).

“Last time they outrebounded us, so it was big that we were able to play

with good fundamentals and box out and get to the ball in some big spots

today,” he said.

“We just didn’t do the little things well tonight,” Durden said. “They

outhustled us to some loose balls and boxed out better and just did most of

the little things better.”

The battle for momentum in the game started out in GAC’s favor, as the

Spartans jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in the first quarter.

Buford responded, coming all the way back and taking the lead on a

buzzer-beater by senior Vicky Wilson at the end of the first, making it

13-12.

The Wolves controlled the momentum throughout the rest of the half, using an

aggressive full-court press to get GAC out of rhythm and building their lead

to as many as nine in the half.

Momentum shifted back to the Spartans in the second half as GAC rattled off

10 points to take a 33-31 lead and got the Wolves in foul trouble.

GAC was in the bonus with five minutes still to go in the third quarter and

took advantage, going 13-for-19 from the line in the half, including

8-for-11 in the fourth quarter as they kept the Wolves at bay. Buford’s

pressure defense didn’t seem as aggressive in the second half and when it

was turned up, GAC responded. The Spartans found a way to break it and get

some easy baskets in the fourth quarter as they ran the lead up to as many

as 13 points, ultimately winning by a nine-point margin.

“It’s just five people out there doing what I know they can,” Mitchell said.

“This is some of the most consistently good play that I’ve seen from them

this year.”

That consistency is what Durden will be looking for from his charges as they

battle for third place in the region today against East Hall and into the

state playoffs.

“We need to learn that we have to play all 32 minutes if we want to win,” he

said. “We just need to play like we did in the second half today and we’ll

have a good shot,” Mitchell said.

>WRESTLING

COACH JEFF HARSH REPORTS:

Five Spartan wrestlers qualified for the state tournament this past weekend

with a sixth making it as an alternate. This makes them in the top 16

wrestlers in the state at their weight class in AA. This was the most

wrestlers we’ve taken to state in five years.

Senior co-captain Andrew Deneen, junior Ben Hixson, and freshmen Locke

Hoover and Travis Elrod all qualified for the first time while junior Mason

Deal was in his second appearance at state. Several days before competition,

Ben Hixson tore cartilage in his shoulder and was unable to compete at the

tournament.

All four wrestlers in the tournament won their first match and co-captain

Mason Deal went on to take a fifth place medal at 119 lbs. at state over at

the Gwinnett Arena. Mason joins other great Spartan wrestlers in placing at

the state tournament and has plans to place even higher next season.

Congratulate your Spartan wresters this season for their success and their

hard work to make it so far.

CSS to Televise GHSA Wrestling

Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) will televise action from the GHSA

Traditional Wrestling State Championship in a taped two-hour program to air

Thursday, Feb 16th at 9:00 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 17th at 12:30 p.m.  The

2006 state tournament was held on Feb. 9-11 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center

featuring the first time consolidation of all five classifications competing

at a single site.  This is the eighth season that CSS has broadcast GHSA

wrestling, which first aired in 1999.  The announce team of Matt Stewart and

Gordon Pritz will deliver the move-by-move commentary.

>BASEBALL: Spartans will play at Turner Field

The Spartans need the help of the entire GACS Family from Kindergarten to

High School to help Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). Children's

Healthcare has long been a leader in pediatric medical healthcare. Their

doors have always been open to all members of the community.  Now, it is OUR

TURN to help them.

CHOA, again for the third year, will be hosting the Spring Baseball Classic.

Money raised from these baseball games will benefit their Brain Tumor

Services department. The funds are being allocated to purchase an

intra-operative MRI machine, the purpose of which is to provide guidance

during neurosurgical procedures. This kind of surgical navigation systems

orients and guides the surgeon based on pre-operative and operative imaging.

Using the intra-operative MRI minimizes the invasive nature of surgery for

brain tumors, enhances the overall safety of brain procedures, and reduces

hospital costs (like length of stay).

We need the support of GACS families and GACS family-owned businesses.

Please plan to buy tickets for your family and employees to attend this

game. The Spartans play against Wesleyan at 4:00pm followed by the long

standing rivalry of Georgia vs. Georgia Tech.

Game Date: Wednesday, May 10, 2006.

First game: GAC Spartans vs. Wesleyan Wolves at 4:00pm.

Second game:  Georgia vs. Georgia Tech at 7:00pm.

Location: Turner Field.

Tickets are $10 each.

Seating is general admission.
