GAC GIRLS USE SECOND-HALF SURGE FOR VICTORY
By Chris King, Staff Correspondent
Feb. 19 Gwinnett Daily Post
NORCROSS
— It was a tale of two halves for the Greater Atlanta Christian
girls basketball team.
In the first half, sluggish play and a lack of aggression by the Spartans
gave Oglethorpe County reason to smile, briefly. But GAC used a 12-2 run and
some tenacious pressure defense at the start of the third quarter to take
control for a 75-41 win over the Patriots in the first round of the Class AA
girls state tournament.
The Spartans now face Pace Academy at Mt. Zion-Jonesboro at 4 p.m. on
Thursday.
"We just did not execute in the first half," GAC head coach Mike Mitchell
said. "We gave up too many second-chance points. We played much better
basketball in the second half."
GAC led by nine points at the end of the first quarter but Oglethorpe
County, behind the hot shooting of Nikeitta Chappell, outscored the Spartans
13-10 in the second quarter, cutting the lead to six at the half. Chappell
led the Patriots with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
D’Nay Daniels helped the Spartans (22-7) get things going in the third
quarter, scoring eight of her 17 points as GAC outscored Oglethorpe 24-14 in
the period.
The Spartans put things away in the fourth quarter, continuing their
pressure defense and smart play, allowing the Patriots only six points while
scoring 24 points of their own to secure their first-round victory.
"We did not know what to expect from them," Daniels said. "We heard they
were quick and inexperienced. We had things figured out by halftime and we
took care of business in the second half."
The Spartans had a balanced scoring attack. Julio Stephens finished with 16
points, Kiara Swanier and Courtney Samuels each finished with 11 points, and
Sally Carroll ended the night with nine points for GAC. Swanier also chipped
in with eight rebounds and six assists.
Leslee Smith finished with seven points and five rebounds for Oglethorpe Co.
(14-15). Jasmine Smith added six points and Kiarra Turner scored five points
and grabbed 10 rebounds.
SEVEN GWINNETT GIRLS' TEAMS MOVE ON TO ROUND 2 OF STATE
By LARRY HARTSTEIN
Feb. 20 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Twelve Gwinnett girls teams entered the state tournament, and seven
survived.
Now three of those seven will face opponents they ousted in last year's
playoffs.
Top-ranked Collins Hill (27-1) hosts Marietta on Wednesday in a rematch of
the Eagles' closest 2005 state tournament game. In that 50-46 quarterfinal
win, Collins Hill trailed by 10 with six minutes to go before finishing on
an 18-4 run.
That memorable game was played at Georgia Tech. This year, the Blue Devils
have to travel to Suwanee. Last year, Marietta featured center Angel
Robinson and was ranked No. 2. This year, Robinson is a Georgia Bulldog and
Marietta is unranked. But the Blue Devils, led now by point guard Kristen
Murdock, are 21-8 and still dangerous.
Wesleyan hopes to replay last year's quarterfinal win over Holy Innocents'.
The Wolves dominated 46-27, knocking off what was then the top-ranked Class
AA team.
That victory avenged Wesleyan's last loss in the state tournament. In the
2003 playoffs, Holy Innocents' beat Wesleyan in the quarterfinals. This
year, Wesleyan (26-3) shares the top ranking with Laney, while Holy
Innocents' is ranked No. 7.
Wesleyan beat Holy Innocents' by 26 points during the regular season.
"I don't think we'll do anything differently," said Wolves coach Jan Azar,
who is friends with Golden Bears coach Liz Kennedy. "We'll try to put a lot
of pressure on them."
Hebron Christian faces the same second-round opponent
— Southwest Atlanta
Christian
— it beat last year 63-54. The 10th-ranked Lions enter 21-6, while
SWAC is 16-14 and unranked.
Of Gwinnett's other survivors, Brookwood has the toughest matchup. The
Broncos (17-10) visit Campbell, which is 26-2 and ranked third in the state.
Mill Creek (20-10) also hits the road to play 22-7 Pebblebrook. Sixth-ranked
South Gwinnett (25-4) hosts perennial state contender McEachern.
In another battle of ranked teams, GAC plays Pace Academy on Thursday in
Jonesboro. GAC is 22-7 and ranked sixth, while Pace is 22-5 and ranked
ninth.
The Spartans reached the Sweet 16 with a 75-41 win over Oglethorpe County as
D'Nay Daniels scored 17, Julio Stephens 16, and Kiki Swanier and Courtney
Samuels each added 11.
A GOOD START FOR THE HOOPS DOC
By J.C. Clemons
February 20 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Hoops Doctor is feeling good. But not spry enough to brag. Such is the
lot of basketball prognosticator. Picked 12 of 16 girls first-round state
tournament winners in Class AAAAA. Slipped to 10-6 with boys. Oh well, on
with the show.
Gwinnett teams remain poised to make more noise in the state tournament.
Particularly in Class AAAAA and Class AA, where most county schools compete.
Several could run on to the Final Four
— or beyond.
Here’s how they stack up: CLASS AA
WOW FACTOR: (girls) Coaches like to preach balanced scoring, but with D’Nay
Daniels healthy, GAC rises from good to, perhaps, great. … (boys) On the
other hand, Wesleyan is not just Howard Thompkins & Boys after all, as 78-73
win over Westside-Macon confirmed.
FAB FIVE: (girls) Sarah Delk, Wesleyan (22 points); Ashley Houts, Dade
County (26 points); Daniels, GAC (17 points); Alexis Rogers, Holy Innocents’
(20 points); Lauren Falohun, Pace (19 points). … (boys) Tanner Smith,
Wesleyan (40 points); Cam Sherman, Buford (20 points); Frank Davis, East
Hall (35 points); Mikyle McGee, Lamar County (31 points); Xavier Collins,
Laney (27 points).
UPSET SPECIALS: (girls) East Hall over Model. … (boys) Grady over Buford.
MUST SEE: (girls) Pace-GAC; Laney-Dade. … (boys) Dublin-Mitchell-Baker;
Lovett-Wesleyan.
LOCKS: (girls) Wesleyan; Laney. … (boys) East Hall; Greenville.

>BOYS LACROSSE
GAC parent Doug Curd reports:
GACS played the first boy's Lacrosse game in school history on Friday night
under the lights at Spartan Stadium. The Spartan's home opener was against
Chattahoochee High School. The news was great as the Spartans won the game 7
to 3.
The first goal scored by GAC came from Nate McCarter in the second quarter.
he Spartan's scoring was led by William Shuford's four goals, Nate McCarter
added his second goal and Thomas Bolton also had a goal. The defense of
Brett Shanley, Banks Lee, Ryan Daugherty and Ty Smith did an excellent job
all night long in front of the goalie, Drew Curd, who stopped 10 of 13 shots
to contribute to the first victory in school history. Great team effort!
If you have never seen a Lacrosse game in person, you are encouraged to
attend. It is fast paced, hard hitting and plenty of action.
The team's next game is against Wesleyan on Friday, Feb 24th at Spartan
Stadium at 7 PM. Come out and support the Spartans.
