GAC OUSTS PACE ACADEMY TO ADVANCE AT STATE; REMATCH WITH EAST HALL SATURDAY By Larry Hartstein Feb. 24 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greater Atlanta Christian's D'Nay Daniels had extra motivation for Thursday's Class AA second round in Jonesboro. Her mom Orlanda had paid $10 to get in after a long ride to the game.
"My mom told me, 'I better get my money's worth,' " Daniels said with a laugh. "So I said, 'Alright mom, I got you.' I had to come out and show her.
So now she can leave me alone and won't lecture me for an hour on the way home."
The versatile junior presumably had a pleasant ride home after scoring 22 points, grabbing seven rebounds and handing out three assists in the Spartans' 54-40 win over Pace Academy at Mt. Zion High School.
GAC (23-7) is in the quarterfinals for the third straight year. The Knights finished 22-6.
GAC led most of the way but had to withstand several Pace runs. Daniel's offensive rebound and three-point play put the Spartans up 36-27 late in the third.
Pace countered with a 10-2 surge capped by South Carolina signee Lauren Falohun's three-point play. That's when GAC's superior depth showed.
Point guard Bria Smith drove hard to the basket, scoring all six of her points in the fourth. Sally Carroll drained a 3-pointer off a Julio Stephens feed. When Stephens hit a tough bank shot, it was 49-40 with 1:30 left. The Spartans made 9-of-10 foul shots in the quarter.
"In the fourth quarter we just had some kids make plays and make some free throws to extend the lead and hold them off," coach Mike Mitchell said.
"Pace came out and hustled tremendously and tried to go to their two kids who can score. They had a great gameplan."
Falohun scored 17, and junior Megan Elliott added 13. But the Knights managed just one field goal in the fourth.
"The luxury at GAC is sometimes your best players don't have to do everything," Pace coach Shana Vidal said. "My two best players have to guard their best offensive players, run the offense and score. So I think in the end Lauren and Megan both got a little tired. You could tell by their shots they got tired. But they fought hard."
GAC got a big lift from Mollie Mitchell, who scored all nine of her points in the second half. Stephens scored eight, and Kiki Swanier defended Falohun and made four steals.
The Spartans are deep, but it all starts with Daniels. The 5-8 junior posted up and scored over bigger defenders, pulled up for jumpers and attacked the basket.
"She can play everywhere on the floor and she has got so much ability,"
Mitchell said. "Every night we just kind of watch and see a little bit more.
She wants to play well in big games and she knows she's the player on this team to get everybody else going."
Daniels took a hard fall in the first quarter. She lay on the court turning in pain for several moments, and her mom came out to check on her along with coaches and the trainer.
Daniels was able to walk off gingerly. When she returned a few minutes later, she resumed the show her mom - and all Spartans' fans - came to see.
[The Lady Spartans play region rival East Hall in the third round Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm. During the regular season GAC was 1-1 against the Lady

LADY VIKINGS UPSET #3-RANKED MODEL; WILL FACE GAC SATURDAY By Ben Valentine ©Copyright 2005 AccessNorthGa.com / WDUN News/Talk 550.
JONESBORO - The East Hall girls basketball team continues to show that its’
not a team to be over looked as it beat third ranked Model in the Class AA State Playoffs.
The Lady Vikings (21-9) took the lead for good in the third quarter to beat Model (28-2) 45-38 and advance to the Elite Eight.
Leania Bulloch led the way for the Vikings with 12 points.
Lisa Coleman also showed up playing well in every area of the game by scoring 10 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, passing out 4 assists.
Another girl that stepped up for East Hall was Kela Coleman. She finished with 8 points and also had 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Jennifer Harris finished the game with 8 points and had a great defensive effort.
East Hall coach Allen Pritchett said his girls were focused, "The girls played really well today. The kids did what we wanted them to do."
East Hall's defense was outstanding all night, shutting down Model's Perimeter shooters and not allowing them to get any good looks at the basket.
"We were able to take away their (Model) offense," Pritchett said about the key to the Lady Vikings win.
East Hall will advance to the Elite Eight to play region foe GAC on Saturday at 4:00 P.M. at Mount Zion High School in Jonesboro.
"They (GAC) seem to be peaking at the right time," Pritchett said.
"It's going to be a war on Saturday."
