SPARTANS EXORCISE DEMONS; MAKE IT TO SEMIFINALS
By Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer
Feb. 26 Gwinnett Daily Post
JONESBORO
— You could hear the chants of "Macon! Macon! Macon!" coming out
of the Greater Atlanta Christian locker room after its quarterfinal win on
Friday and one thing was clear.
The Spartans have their eyes on the prize.
"All I want now is the ring," junior post player D’Nay Daniels said. "It’s
all about getting there with these teammates, but the ring makes it even
better."
GAC made it through the quarterfinal round that had been their stumbling
block the past two seasons, advancing to the Final Four in Class AA by
defeating Region 8-AA foe East Hall 57-39 on Saturday at Mt. Zion High
School in Jonesboro.
"The last two years we got knocked out in the Elite Eight, so we knew that
we had to be the team to step it up and make it into the Final Four and we
did it," junior guard Kiara Swanier said.
"The kids have been here before and they want to move on, and they’re
learning again to rely on one another more and more every day," GAC head
coach Mike Mitchell said.
The two teams played a very even first quarter, finishing with a buzzer
beating 3-pointer by Bria Smith to tie it at 13.
"They came at us hard and made two or three runs, but each time we settled
down and answered," Mitchell said. "I can’t give the kids enough credit
today
— D’Nay, Kiara, Bria, all of them — it was a total team effort."
The teams split their regular season meetings, each winning by just one
point. But this time it wasn’t nearly that close, as the Spartans started to
pull away at the end of the first half.
"I really like that run at the end of the second quarter where it was back
and forth, and then we do three or four good things and we’re up eight,"
Mitchell said. "That really helped us settle down."
"We knew that we could beat them, and each time we had played them before we
weren’t at 100 percent, and today we were," Daniels said.
It also didn’t hurt that GAC forced 18 turnovers while only turning it over
eight times itself.
"We have that ability, but sometimes we just don’t pay enough attention to
the situations and step in like we did today," Mitchell said.
"We knew that their big girls couldn’t keep up with us, so we tried to make
them keep up with our tempo," Swanier said.
The Spartans continued to play good defense and cause turnovers through the
second half, and weathering a Viking run that cut the lead from 10 points to
five.
"Today it was just a matter of who made the plays more consistently and we
were just the more consistent ones overall," Mitchell said.
GAC used that consistency to pull away in the fourth quarter, stretching the
lead to 13 during a four-minute scoreless drought for East Hall.
Now the Spartans move on to the semifinals, where they will play Dodge
County on Thursday.
"We’re going to Macon for the state championship," Swanier said.
"There’s not much more to say than that," Daniels added.
SPARTANS SURVIVE TO EARN ELITE EIGHT BERTH
By Dan Tomayko, Staff Reports
Feb. 24 Gwinnett Daily Post
JONESBORO
— The Greater Atlanta Christian girls moved on thanks to a hot
start from an expected source, plus some help from an unexpected one.
Mollie Mitchell came off the bench to give leading scorer D’Nay Daniels a
hand and the Spartans held off a hard-charging Pace Academy squad 54-40 to
advance to the quarterfinals of the Class AA state tournament.
Daniels got 15 of her game-high 22 points in the first half as she helped
the Spartans to an early lead on Thursday at Mt. Zion.
"I was definitely feeling it," Daniels said of her first-half performance.
"My mom always gives me some motivation before the game, and today I knew I
had to show up for the team."
"She can play anywhere out there on the floor, and she’s got a tremendous
ability," GAC head coach Mike Mitchell said. "Every night we go out there
and watch what happens."
Mollie Mitchell’s major contribution came at the start of the third quarter
as she scored the first seven points for the Spartans to build a nine-point
cushion. Mitchell finished with nine key points for GAC.
"She came out and got some opportunities there and made the most of them,"
her dad and coach said. "It’s like that every night with this group.
Somebody else steps up, and they’re all capable of doing it. On nights where
all of them do it, wow, they’re fun to watch."
However, between the two Spartan runs, Pace came charging back. The Knights
used a stifling defense to force GAC into a virtual standstill in the third
quarter. Pace reeled off a 12-2 run at the end of the third and beginning of
the fourth quarters to cut the lead to just one at 38-37.
"We were just saying that we just needed to go at it and keep working hard,
and we would eventually start getting more chances and to the foul line,"
Daniels said of the team’s attitude as Pace closed in.
The Knights’ charge was led by 17 points from Lauren Falohun as well as 13
from Megan Elliot. But ultimately, it wasn’t enough.
"We came out and played well, but later on we let them back in it by not
doing things well that I know we can do," Mike Mitchell said. "But in the
fourth quarter we just had some kids make some plays and some free throws to
extend the lead and hold them off."
Free-throw shooting was something that helped Pace get back into the game as
well, with the fouls in their favor by a 10-2 margin at one point in the
fourth quarter.
Pace made only three field goals in the second half, but was able to cash in
from the charity stripe to keep it close for a while, hitting 11 of its 18
free throws in the half.
"They didn’t have to shoot from outside. We were doing a poor job
defensively and giving them shots from the line, and we knew we needed to
fix that," Mitchell said.
They did that and got to the line themselves, going 9-for-11 in the fourth
quarter as the Spartans pulled away for the 14-point win.
In the quarterfinals, GAC will take on region rival East Hall, which won its
Sweet 16 game on Thursday over Model 45-38.

STAR STUDENT ALLISON TURNER CHOOSES MIKE GLENN AS HER STAR TEACHER
By Rubina Madan, Staff Writer
Feb. 25 Gwinnett Daily Post
DULUTH
— Taking the SAT — a nerve-wracking experience for many high school
students
— was no problem for the 22 seniors honored Friday at this year’s
STAR banquet. They all got the highest scores at their respective schools,
some of them without even studying for it.
All the students were also in the top 10 percent of their class. They each
chose a teacher to recognize as having a strong influence on their
successful academic careers.
The county will be sending the two students with the best scores to the
regional STAR competition. Buford High School senior Will Hunter will
represent Buford City Schools, along with his teacher Tim Harris. Amanda
Brouillette of Parkview High School, who got a perfect score, will represent
Gwinnett County Public Schools. She chose Doug Wagner as her STAR teacher.
Hunter admitted he didn’t really have to study for his stellar score. He
didn’t give away any secrets on how to excel on the SAT, except the obvious:
"Know your math and English well," he said.
All of the top-scoring students, and their teachers, were honored at the
banquet at the 1818 Club. One by one, their school superintendents and
principals presented them with certificates. Both public and private schools
were represented.
"It’s the whipped cream on top of the cake," said Louise Radloff, vice-chair
of the Gwinnett Board of Education. "We want to believe all our children can
be successful, and all of these children have excelled."
The school system sent six students to the regional competition last year.
All of them had tied with a perfect score of 1,600. It is more difficult to
get a perfect score on the new SAT, which has three sections: writing,
critical reading and math.
Brouillette was the only student in Gwinnett County to get the highest
possible score, 2,400, on the new SAT. But because she was attending a
fellowship program at the University of Georgia, she couldn’t make it to the
banquet to accept her award.
Her father, Gerald, didn’t think the new SAT writing section was a challenge
for his daughter.
"She happens to be very good with language arts and essays, so the addition
was good for her," he said.
Brouillette and Hunter will go on to represent the county at the regional
level. A panel of judges will choose the Georgia STAR student and teacher
from the regional winners. Selection is based on scholarship,
extracurricular activities, citizenship and leadership initiative.
Last year, the top Georgia STAR students were both from Gwinnett County.
Lucas Bermudez of Parkview High School was the 2005 state STAR student, and
he named his physics teacher, Philip Heier, as his STAR teacher. Joseph Song
of Brookwood High School was the first runner-up in the state competition.
He chose biology teacher Dan Rawlins as his STAR teacher.
