FINAL FOUR! LADY SPARTANS PLAY SEMIFINALS TODAY IN MACON

CLASS AA GIRLS
[reprinted from Mar. 2 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution]

GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN VS. DODGE COUNTY
When: 4 p.m. today
Where: Macon Centreplex

Records, rankings: GAC 24-7, No. 6; Dodge County 24-4, No. 4

Road to the final four: GAC beat Oglethorpe County 75-41, Pace Academy 54-40
and East Hall 57-39; Dodge beat Macon County 56-48, Brantley County 36-29
and West Laurens 49-44.

About GAC: Junior D'Nay Daniels is averaging 19 points, and she's getting
plenty of offensive help from Kiki Swanier, Bria Smith, Courtney Samuels,
Julio Stephens, Sally Carroll and Mollie Mitchell. Swanier is a defensive
stopper, and Stephens can outrun and outjump most forwards. Peaking at the
right time, the Spartans are in the semifinals for the first time since
2002. GAC is seeking its eighth state championship.

About Dodge: The team is led by 6-2 junior center Kimberly Gay (18 ppg, 8
rpg). Dodge lost to Dade County in last year's semifinals. Senior point
guard Jeanne Burgess (6 ppg, 4 apg, 3 spg) and junior forward Shareil Walker
(10 ppg, 6 rpg) are also big contributors. Gay has been on a roll in the
tournament, scoring 23 in the quarterfinals. Dodge has won 15 in a row.

Outlook: GAC's collapsing defense limited East Hall's pivot players in the
quarterfinal. If the Spartans have similar success against Gay, they'll
advance to the championship game.

WESLEYAN VS. SCREVEN COUNTY
When: 7 p.m. today
Where: Macon Centreplex

Records, rankings: Wesleyan 28-3, No. 1; Screven 29-2, No. 5

Road to the final four: Wesleyan beat Westside-Augusta 84-37, Holy
Innocents' 56-43 and Laney 62-46; Screven beat Jackson 61-38, Fitzgerald
47-23 and Early County 51-45.

About Wesleyan: The Wolves are brimming with talent, experience and
confidence as they go for the three-peat. Senior forward Lé Lé LeSeur and
senior point guard Carolyn Whitney combine for 25 points a game, and
freshman Anne Marie Armstrong comes off the bench to average nearly 10.
Elise Whitney and Kelly Hall harass opposing ballhandlers into turnovers.
Junior forward Sarah Delk is a tough post player who complements LeSeur. One
indication of Wesleyan's ability is its late December win over South
Gwinnett, which has advanced to the Class AAAAA final four.

About Screven: After exiting in the first round last year, the Gamecocks won
their region and enter the semis on a 23-game winning streak. Forward
Kadedra Evans, a 6-1 junior, averages 15 points and 11 rebounds. Senior
guard Gabby Simon chips in 12 points and more than two assists per game.
Simon has hit 60 3-pointers. If the Gamecocks have an Achilles' heel, it's
their 51 percent free-throw shooting.

Outlook: Screven should give Wesleyan its biggest test so far. That said,
the Wolves seem destined for the title game.

GAC BACK IN FINAL FOUR WITHOUT STARS
By Brandon Brigman, Staff Writer
Mar. 1 Gwinnett Daily Post

They may not have the star power of the 2001 or 2002 state championship
teams, but the Greater Atlanta Christian girls basketball team is back in
the Class AA Final Four for the first time since 2002.

The Spartans' last semifinal team, which eventually won the state title,
featured Sherill Baker, Katie Beth Pate, and Krista Watson. Baker is now one
of the top players in the SEC with the Georgia Bulldogs and Pate is now
starring at Lipscomb University.

This season's squad may not have the Division I talent, size or the depth of
the 2002 championship team, but it makes up for that in other areas.

"This team doesn't quite have the star power, but they hustle, play hard and
play great defense," GAC girls coach Mike Mitchell said.

GAC is back in the semifinals after back-to-back years of being put out in
the quarterfinals and one year of being eliminated in the first round. The
Spartans will face Dodge County on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Macon
Centerplex.

GAC has breezed through its first three opponents of the tournament, winning
by an average of 22 points per game. During that span, the Spartans are
holding the opposition to an average of 40 points per game.

"I think we are playing a lot more consistent and taking care of the
basketball," Mitchell said. "Right now we're just playing good basketball."

One reason for the Spartans' consistent play has been D'Nay Daniels. The
junior is the Spartans' leading scorer with 15.4 points per game and has
played consistent all season.

"She's just doing a little bit of everything, playing smarter and a more
solid game," Mitchell said.
Julio Stephens and Kiara Swanier have also emerged for the Spartans
recently. Stephens turned in 16 points in the Spartans' first-round win over
Oglethorpe and Swanier scored 16 in GAC's quarterfinals victory over East
Hall on Saturday.

GAC will have its hands full with Dodge County's 6-2 post player Kimberly
Gay, who can create problems inside defensively for the Spartans. Gay scored
23 points in Dodge County's 49-44 quarterfinal win over West Laurens.

"I'm just proud of these kids to where they have gotten," Mitchell said. "I
just hope they go out and play hard."

Leading scorer D'Nay Daniels is the most obvious reason Greater Atlanta
Christian is in the Class AA semifinals.

Here are some more:

The Spartans are holding teams to 40 points a game in the tournament. Their
helping, hustling defense is eliminating backdoor cuts and open layups.
Opponents are getting one shot on most possessions. In critical situations,
the Spartans (24-7) are executing their offense and not freezing up.

Senior forward Courtney Samuels said the biggest factor is intensity.

"We want to win state; we want that really badly, so we've really picked it
up," she said at practice Monday. "We're more intense; we dive after every
loose ball; we're going to get after it. We're more focused because we're so
close to the end."

Junior Kiki Swanier also has detected increased urgency.

"Our defense has definitely picked up," said Swanier, who scored 16 points
in Saturday's 57-39 quarterfinal win over East Hall while playing her usual
withering defense. "Coach has pushed us hard, we've done a lot of drills to
work on our defense and rebounding, and it's really paid off."

The same Spartans who lost to East Hall by one point Jan. 20 beat the
Vikings by 18 on Saturday with a semifinal berth at stake. Coach Mike
Mitchell said his players are showing better understanding of when to attack
offensively and when not to.

They're also showing a lot more poise.

"Every time somebody has made a run, we've answered it," he said. "Instead
of giving up a 10- or 12-point run, we give up a six-point run and then
answer it with a six- or seven-point run of our own."

Daniels is averaging 20 points in her past four games. Other Spartans are
taking turns as double-digit scorers. With eight players capable of scoring,
no one is forcing the action and GAC is getting higher-percentage shots.

"We're picking our spots better, and that makes us hard to beat," Mitchell
said.

The team gathers for "championship dinners" the night before each playoff
game. The name is a reminder of their ultimate goal.

But just making the final four is a big reward for GAC, which lost
heartbreaking quarterfinals the previous two years.

"Truthfully, I didn't think we'd get this far," said forward Julio Stephens,
whose recent emergence is one of the reasons they have. "But I'm really,
really excited."

Spartans win opener over St. Pius 9-6
The 2006 edition of Spartan baseball traveled to Oglethorpe University
[Monday] and began the season in good fashion, taking a 9-6 road win versus
the St. Pius Golden Lions. The Spartans sent 6 pitchers to the hill and
registered 13 strikeouts in their combined outing versus only 3 walks.
Landon Bennett closed out the game with authority, registering 3 strikeouts
in the bottom of the seventh.

The Golden Lions got on the board first, pushing a run across versus starter
Taylor Wood in the second inning. But the Spartan bats got warmed up in the
top of the 3rd as Landon Bennett mashed a triple to deep center to score
catcher Brock Bennett. Landon would score soon thereafter on a passed ball
and the Spartans held a lead that they would not relinquish on the evening.
Brock had a great night at the plate, going 3 for 4, as did Landon Bennett.
John Wood, Colton Chapple, Mark Edwards, and Patrick Savage also had hits as
the Spartans totaled 10 hits for the game.

The Spartans return home to the friendly confines of Hester Field this
Thursday for the home opener versus the Holy Innocents Bears and wrap up the
week at home on Friday versus Eagles Landing. [reprinted from Spartan
baseball website]

SHERILL BAKER, GAC GRAD & UGA STAR, PICKED FOR ALL-SEC TEAM
[Mar. 2 Gwinnett Daily Post]

Greater Atlanta Christian grad Sherill Baker, a senior on the Georgia
women's basketball team, was a unanimous first-team All-SEC selection in
voting by the league's coaches. Baker ranks third in the SEC and 36th
nationally in scoring (18.0 per game) and leads the SEC in steals and
minutes played.

The guard leads the nation in steals and set the SEC career steals mark
earlier this season. She holds the Georgia game, season and career steals
records and ranks 15th in NCAA career steals. Teammate Tasha Humphrey also
was a unanimous first-teamer.

"In Sherill and Tasha, you really have two opposites," Georgia women's coach
Andy Landers said. "When the season started, probably a lot of people would
have bet that Tasha, who was unanimous a year ago, would be unanimous again.
On the other hand, you have (Baker) who wasn't on an All-SEC team a year
ago, who is so impressive that she becomes unanimous. It's nice to have two
people recognized and thought of so highly."
