> WESLEYAN GIRLS CONTINUE DYNASTY

> By Larry Hartstein

> Mar. 5 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

>

> Macon The Wesleyan Wolves picked a great time to play their best

> game. They ran by Greater Atlanta Christian 75-56 Saturday to

> three-peat as Class AA basketball champions.

>

> Wesleyan (30-3) became the first girls team to win three titles in a

> row since Hart County took six straight from 1989-94.

>

> It was a dominant, entertaining performance by Wesleyan, which had all

> its talent clicking in unison. Once the Wolves increased the pace to

> their breakneck liking, it was over for the Spartans (25-8).

>

> Power forward Le' Le' LeSeur scored 20 points; junior center Sarah

> Delk added 19, and junior guard Kelly Hall had 11. Elise Whitney made

> six steals, and twin Carolyn Whitney had eight assists. Freshman Anne

> Marie Armstrong contributed six points, three assists and a block.

>

> "That's the best we've played all season," Wolves coach Jan Azar said.

> "They knew it was going to be their last game and they just went out

> and played and had a good time. You could tell they were having fun

> out there."

>

> When LeSeur fouled out with 3:26 left, she hugged every teammate and

> waved her headband to the loud Wesleyan crowd.

>

> "It's just a dream come true to end it like this in my senior year,"

> LeSeur said.

>

> It was 29-25 when the inevitable Wolves' run came.

> LeSeur hit a spinning

> bank shot, then Elise Whitney hit a shot on the break. Armstrong

> rebounded a miss and scored while being knocked to the floor.

> When she completed the

> three-point play, the lead was 36-25.

>

> Wesleyan forced 22 turnovers, which led to fast breaks and layups.

>

> The Spartans, who made an impressive late-season run, got 16 points

> from Julio Stephens and 10 from D'Nay Daniels. But they couldn't excel

> at Wesleyan's pace.

>

> "Down the stretch [of the season] they stepped up their level of

> play," GAC coach Mike Mitchell said. "Today they played hard, but we

> weren't as consistent as we needed to be against a very good team."

>

> Ahead by 10 at halftime, Wesleyan put away the game with an 11-0

> third-quarter spurt. Alison Watt's pretty flip pass to LeSeur for a

> three-point play capped the onslaught, making it 60-39.

>

> "Le Le and Sarah probably played their best games of the year, and

> everyone else just played really, really hard," said Carolyn Whitney,

> one of five seniors along with her twin, LeSeur, Watt and Amaris

> Wilson.

>

> "I knew if we played really hard it would be really hard to stop us."

>

> It was the Wolves' fourth victory of the season against GAC, their

> Norcross rival. The region championship came down to the final

> seconds, but this time Wesleyan left no doubt.

>

> "In the locker room and whenever we went in the huddle, we said, 'No

> regrets . . . put it all out on the court,'" Delk said. "And I think

> we did that."

>

> WESLEYAN DEFEATS GAC 75-56 FOR THIRD STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP By

> Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer Mar. 5 Gwinnett Daily Post

>

> MACON In Georgia Class AA girls basketball, you can spell dynasty

> W-E-S-L-E-Y-A-N.

>

> The Wolves went out and dominated in the state championship game for

> their third consecutive title, topping Region 8-AA rival Greater

> Atlanta Christian in nearly every aspect of the game, winning 75-56.

>

> "This is the best we've played all season," Wesleyan head coach Jan

> Azar said. "They were having fun out there. They were out there with

> smiles on their faces and not playing tight at all I think because

> they knew that this was it, they didn't have to worry about tomorrow.

> That really made the

> difference in the game."

>

> "We finally played how we know we can," senior guard Elise Whitney

> said. "We knew that we could do it, so we were basically playing

> against ourselves and trying to leave everything out on the floor."

> Whitney led the charge on the defensive end for the Wolves, getting

> six steals as Wesleyan caused 22 GAC turnovers and turned in over just

> nine times.

>

> Wesleyan proved to be just too well-rounded of a team for the

> Spartans. The Wolves had four players in double-figures to give them a

> 4-0 record against GAC this season.

>

> "I'm proud of everything that they've accomplished,"

> Azar said. "I told them

> before the game that I was proud of them win or lose, and no matter

> the result this was the best group of players that I had ever coached.

>

> "We may not have had the best individual player (of the three-title

> run), but this may have been the best team," the Wolves head coach

> added. "They were able to give up their individuality and play as a

> team."

>

> "They do such a great job at every position," GAC head coach Mike

> Mitchell said. "They just put pressure on you from the very start and

> do such a good job of recognition that they can take advantage of any

> opening that's there."

>

> Only leading 17-16 after one quarter, Wesleyan quietly took control in

> the second, starting off on a 6-2 run to turn its one-point advantage

> into a five point edge at 23-18.

>

> The Wolves pushed their lead out to 10 with some good play from Sarah

> Delk and Le Le LeSeur inside, with the post players finishing the half

> with 13 and nine points, respectively.

>

> "Coach told us before the game that we were bigger than (our opponent)

> for one of the few times this season, so we knew that me and Le Le

> would have the opportunity to step up, and our guards were looking for

> us," Delk said.

>

> LeSeur finished with 20 points to lead the Wolves, while Delk had 19.

>

> Freshman Anne Marie Armstrong also contributed with an inside-outside

> game, hitting a 3-pointer as well as driving to the basket as she

> scored all six of her points in the second quarter off the bench.

>

> The Spartans were led in the half by Julio Stephens, who had 10

> points, and a team-high 16 to finish the game.

>

> Defensively, Kiara Swanier was able to keep Carolyn Whitney largely in

> check, with the Wolves' field general only managing three points in

> the half and seven in the game.

>

> Whitney, however, found other ways to contribute, dishing out a

> game-high eight assists.

> Free throw shooting helped keep GAC in the game, going 12-for-15 in

> the half, as opposed to the Wolves' relative struggles from the line,

> shooting 9-for-14, including a 3-for-8 in the first quarter.

> In the second half, the Wolves began to flex their muscles, going on a

> 10-0 run late in the quarter to push the lead to 21, their biggest of

> the game.

>

> "We knew that we just had to get in the flow of things and it just

> kept rolling from there," LeSeur said.

>

> They were able to stave off foul trouble all through the second half,

> with LeSeur fouling out with about three minutes to go and Carolyn

> Whitney and Delk both finishing with four fouls.

>

> "I think this really showed how strong our bench was, when we had to

> sit players because we had some foul trouble and they were able to

> keep up the lead until the starters came back," Azar said.

>

> "It didn't feel great to foul out in my last game, but I looked up and

> saw that we were up by 18, so I was confident that my teammates were

> going to finish it right. That was a good feeling," LeSeur said.

>

> The team did finish it, with Carolyn Whitney hitting two free throws

> before exiting the game and then just running out the clock.

>

> The elated mob of Wolves at center court after the trophy presentation

> had some mixed feelings about the win, excited to get their third, but

> also knowing that an extremely talented group of seniors had just

> played in their final game at Wesleyan.

>

> "I'm just really happy that we were able to end it like this," senior

> Carolyn Whitney said. "This is a great group of girls. All of us had

> such a strong connection, and that is what I'll miss the most."

> That group includes the Whitney twins as well as LeSeur, Alison Watt

> and Amaris Wilson, with the Whitneys starting through all three

> Wesleyan titles.

>

> The sisters will be continuing to play together at Georgia Southern,

> while LeSeur has signed to attend Bucknell.

>

> "We wanted to go out with no regrets," Delk said.

> "We knew that we wanted to

> go out on a good note for our seniors."

>

> The Spartans, however, have their three leading scorers in Stephens,

> Swanier and D'Nay Daniels returning for their senior seasons next

> year.

>

> "It's always good to have this experience if you take it and do

> something with it," Mitchell said. "I'm proud of how all of my girls

> played.

>

> "Especially the seniors, who may not have been our biggest scorers,

> but they found so many ways to contribute both on and off the floor."

>

> For Wesleyan, the continuation of the dynasty will fall on the

> shoulders of current juniors Delk, Kelly Hall as well as Armstrong,

> and they think that the program is in good hands.

>

> "I think we're going to have a good team next year,"

> Delk said. "We've got a

> lot of juniors coming back and a great freshman class, so I think

> we'll be just as good."

>

> Hall also had major contributions in this year's title game, playing

> great defense and scoring 11 points in the win.

>

> Azar, however, wants to just focus on this third title before any

> thoughts of next year come up.

> "It's great," Azar said. "There isn't any better way to send out this

> group of seniors."

>

> WESLEYAN ALREADY EYEING THE "FOUR-PEAT"

> By Larry Hartstein

> Mar. 6 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

>

> As Wesleyan pulled off a Class AA three-peat Saturday, the Wolves also

> sent a message about next season:

>

> Their remarkable run might not be over.

>

> Wesleyan (30-3) will lose Division I signees Lé Lé LeSeur, Carolyn

> Whitney and Elise Whitney, as well as Alison Watt and Amaris Wilson.

> But three key players for next season shone in Saturday's 75-56 win

> over Greater Atlanta Christian, a sign of things to come.

>

> Sarah Delk, a 6-1 junior, got the Wolves started with nine

> first-quarter points. She finished with 19 points and five rebounds.

>

> Kelly Hall, a 5-5 junior, scored 11 points and played her usual

> pestering defense. And freshman Anne Marie Armstrong, a 5-11 point

> guard, displayed an ability to break down the defense. She had three

> assists and six points.

>

> "It will be a young team, but I think we'll have a lot of people

> stepping up," Delk said. "The freshman class is going to be good, Anne

> Marie has definitely matured as a point guard, and the juniors on the

> bench are stepping up."

>

> Michelle Pope, a 6-foot junior, and Amy Spingola, a

> 5-8 junior, also could

> figure prominently in coach Jan Azar's plans.

>

> After Saturday's win, Azar said she just wanted to enjoy the

> three-peat. The streak began with the 2004 title team led by Nikki

> Luckhurst. Sarah Moye and Laura Luckhurst led last year's championship

> squad.

> Of course, the Whitney

> twins have been integral to all three.

>

> "Everybody said we couldn't do it after Nikki graduated," Azar said.

> "Then they said we couldn't do it after Sarah and Laura graduated. Now

> they'll probably say we can't do it with these five graduating. But I

> think the underclassmen feel differently. We'll shoot for it again and

> see what happens."

>

> GAC will have a lot to say about next year's title.

> The Spartans' top four

> scorers from Saturday all are juniors: Julio Stephens, D'Nay Daniels,

> Kiki Swanier and Bria Smith. GAC, however, is losing four seniors

> Courtney Samuels, Sally Carroll, Sarah Grace Pate and Lisa Warren

> who all made big contributions.

>

> Spartans coach Mike Mitchell said he hopes his returning players learn

> from the defeat. With half of GAC's eight losses this season coming to

> Wesleyan, the Spartans will be itching to get even next year.

>

> First, though, they'll have to stop Delk.

>

> The feisty post player was asked whether it will be impossible to

> "four-peat."

>

> "Not at all," she said.

> The Spartans captured their first home win of the season [Friday] as

> they defeated the visiting team from Eagles Landing by a

> 9-5 margin. Taylor Wood

> started on the hill for the home team and worked very efficiently,

> going 4 innings, surrendering 1 hit and striking out 8 batters.

>

> Ryan Griffin came on in the 5th and ran into some trouble after

> striking out the first two batters he faced. Eagles Landing was able

> to plate 5 runs in the inning to close the gap to 8-5 after five. Ryan

> settled in for the 6th and despite a leadoff double, was able to

> escape without any further damage.

> Dillon Geraghty came on in the 7th to close out the win and get the

> save.

>

> At the plate, the Spartans collected nine hits on the evening and

> enjoyed a big second inning, scoring 6 runs. Freshman Patrick Savage

> had a great night, going 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and Taylor Wood went 3

> for 3 with 3 rbi's. Also contributing were seniors Brock Bennett (1-2,

> 2 rbi's) and John Wood (2-4, 2 rbi's), Dillon Geraghty had a sac fly

> rbi, and Landon Bennett had a run scoring single in the second inning.

>

> A good win for the Spartans on a very chilly evening at Hester Field

>

> GAC 9, Eagles' Landing 5

> NORCROSS Greater Atlanta Christian starter Taylor Wood allowed just

> one hit over four innings with eight strikeouts as the Spartans (2-1)

> topped Eagles' Landing 9-5 on Friday. Wood also went

>

> Spartans drop home opener to Holy Innocents 7-8 The Spartans drop

> their home opener of the 2006 season to the visiting Holy Innocents

> Bears by the score of 8-7. The Spartans came out of the gate in good

> fashion as leadoff hitter Mark Edwards reached base safely with a

> single. Landon Bennett's RBI single would score Edwards to enable the

> Spartans to take a 1-0 lead.

>

> Later in the inning, John Wood reached base on a fielders choice and

> first baseman Lee Chapple would drive him in with another RBI single

> and the Spartans held a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Spartan bats

> would get going again in the 3rd, as Landon Bennett continued his hot

> hitting, sending a home run over the left field fence to bring in 2

> more runs.

>

> Brent Burrows would contribute an RBI single later in the 3rd, to push

> the lead to 5-0 after 3 innings. Holy Innocents got their offense

> going in the top of the 4th, plating 2 runs and pulling within 3.

> But the Spartans would

> get those 2 back in the 6th, as two base on balls started the inning

> and Dillon Geraghty bagged the two RBI's as the Spartans headed into

> the final inning leading 7-2.

>

> Unfortunately, the Bears got hot with the bats and plated 6 runs in

> the top of the 7th, the killing blow being a 3 run go ahead homer. The

> Spartans were unable to answer in the bottom half of the 7th and the

> boys took a heartbreaking loss 8-7.

>

> On the hill, Landon Bennett had another good outing, throwing 2

> shutout innings with 3 strikeouts and surrendering only 1 hit. Brent

> Burrows threw the 3rd and 4th innings, surrendering 2 runs. Brock

> Bennett helped Brent out of a 4th inning jam by picking off a runner
