Class 0f '09 lead Spartans over St. Pius 3-1

The Spartans improved their record to 3-1 on the young season by capturing a
3-1 victory over St. Pius Friday night at Hester Field.

With the Spartans trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning,
the home team found itself in need of an offensive spark, and freshmen
teammates Colton Chapple and Patrick Savage provided all that would be
needed.

Coming up to the plate with one out, Savage delivered a triple into the
right center gap to get the potential tying run at third base. Taylor Wood
followed Savage with a walk to put two runners on, and Lee Chapple followed
with a fielder's choice RBI to bring Savage home and knot the score at one
apiece with 2 outs. Colton Chapple then came to the plate and mashed a line
drive to the left center gap to score pinch runner Preston Crosby with the
go-ahead and ultimately winning run.

In the sixth, Dillon Geraghty would add an insurance run, scoring from 3rd
base on an errant pick off attempt by the St. Pius pitcher. Savage led the
way for the Spartan offense, going 3 for 3 on the night, and Mark Edwards
and John Wood also contributed hits.

Taylor Wood got the win on the hill, improving his record to 3-0 by throwing
6 2/3 innings, striking out 7 and scattering 6 hits. Sophomore Brent Burrows
came in to get the save, striking out the final batter of the game. Colton
Chapple also made a very nice put out from his second base position to end
the second inning and strand 2 St. Pius runners in scoring position.

The Spartans go back on the road this week with games at Walker on Monday,
at Providence on Thursday in the region opener, and at Pace Academy on
Saturday.

GAC 3, St. Pius 1
NORCROSS — Taylor Wood pitched six strong innings and recorded seven
strikeouts as he picked up the win to lead Greater Atlanta Christian past
St. Pius 3-1 on Friday. Patrick Savage was 3-for-3 with a triple and Colton
Chapple was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the Spartans. [Mar. 11

LADY SPARTANS PLAY #2-RANKED PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN NEXT SATURDAY

GAC SOCCER TEAMS SWEEP BUFORD
By Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer
Mar. 11 Gwinnett Daily Post

NORCROSS — The Greater Atlanta Christian soccer teams earned a pair of area
wins over Buford on Friday, with the boys topping the Wolves 5-1 and the
girls cruising to an 11-3 decision.

...In the girls' match, the outcome was never truly in doubt, with GAC (5-5,
2-0) jumping on Buford from the opening whistle, with Sarah Brummett scoring
with an assist from Sarah Gwyn in the third minute of the game.

Brummett ended up with a hat trick and two assists, only to be outdone by
teammate Sammy Abrahart, who led the team with four goals and an assist.

Gwyn added two goals of her own to go along with a team-high three assists,
while Whitney Adams also had two goals, with one of them coming on a corner
kick.

"I thought we were capable of this kind of output, but I didn't know if it
would come out after some of the disappointing losses that we've had against
some tough opponents," GAC girls head coach Troy Bendickson said. "This is
probably the most complete game we have played all year. We have had good
first halves and good second halves, but tonight, we put together 80 solid
minutes."
Maria Petroni led the Wolves with two goals, while Sarah Eck also had a good
game with a goal and an assist.

GAC 12, Hebron 0
NORCROSS — Sarah Gwyn scored four goals and Sammy Abrahart added three goals
and two assists as Greater Atlanta Christian routed Hebron 12-0 on Tuesday.
Kristin Frederickson and Sarah Brummett each scored two goals for GAC (4-5)
while Megan Klenke added one. Whitney Adams, Morgan Hall and Kathryn Talluli
each dished two assists. [Mar. 8 Gwinnett Daily Post]

TOMORROW AT HOME! #10-RANKED SPARTANS (AA/A) VS. #5-RANKED WESTMINSTER (AAA)

GAC SOCCER TEAMS SWEEP BUFORD
By Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer
Mar. 11 Gwinnett Daily Post

NORCROSS — The Greater Atlanta Christian soccer teams earned a pair of area
wins over Buford on Friday, with the boys topping the Wolves 5-1 and the
girls cruising to an 11-3 decision.

The boys game was a very slow-paced match, marred by six yellow cards —
three to GAC (4-5, 2-0) and three to Buford — along with numerous stoppages
in play and fouls.

"Don't let that 5-1 score fool you, it was a war out there from start to
finish," GAC boys head coach Thom Jacquet said.

Buford (6-3, 1-1) fired the first shot, getting on the board on a free kick
by forward Misael Martinez that curved in beyond the reach of the Spartans'
keeper.

"After that first goal we knew all was not lost, we knew we just had to
regain control of the match and we'd get our chances," Jacquet said.

After one goal was called back on an offsides call, the Spartans got their
equalizer on a penalty kick, which Nick Ramon put away for the 1-1 score.

GAC added one more before the half, with Taylor Wisted redirecting a corner
kick from Peter Lobona past the keeper for the goal and a 2-1 lead going
into the half.

The Spartans made it a two-goal edge just three minutes into the second half
when Sam Arthur found Chris Thomas streaking down the middle. Thomas beat
his defender and put it past the Wolves' keeper for the score.

GAC added two more goals in the final 10 minutes as the game devolved into
penalty after penalty, with Eric Fletcher putting back a rebound for a goal
and Arthur adding his own goal in the final minute of the game to put it
away for good.

"They just beat us all the way around," Buford boys head coach Brandon
Manders said. "We had no chemistry out on the field. We weren't passing the
ball or shooting the ball well.

"They have to see what went wrong tonight, and learn from it and learn to
trust one another out there on the field instead of trying to do everything
by themselves."

"This is a big win for us," Jacquet said. "It's big because it's Buford and
we know what they're capable of, and it's big just because it's a region
game and they are all that matter from here on out."...

GHSA NEWS

THE HOME FIELD DEBATE: Neutral site issue rages
Craig Custance - Staff
March 13 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The debate over where to play the high school football title games once
again will surface during today's Georgia High School Association football
committee meeting.

Representatives from Region 1-AAAAA, which represents South Georgia's
biggest schools, are presenting a request to reconsider the August decision
to move all football championship games to neutral sites starting this fall.

Any revised proposal for the executive committee must be approved during
today's football committee meeting.

"If I had my guess, there will be a compromise measure that may come out of
the football committee," GHSA executive director Ralph Swearngin said.

It's a 14-year-old debate. In 1992, by a 25-10 margin, the executive
committee shot down a motion to move the championship games to the Georgia
Dome.

The GHSA says Georgia is one of four states to play title games at home
sites. Vermont, New Hampshire and Wyoming are the other three.

"I hope we can come up with a plan that will satisfy people," Swearngin said
of the North-South debate.

Leaders of two of the most successful football programs in the state are on
opposite sides of this issue. Brookwood athletics director Dave Hunter, who
has participated in five title games, all on the road, says that
championship games shouldn't come with a home-field advantage.

Lowndes coach Randy McPherson prefers the current system, where
higher-seeded teams host the championship games. McPherson won the state
title on the road at Parkview two years ago and hosted Brookwood in the
Vikings' championship victory last fall.

Earlier this week, the two discussed the issue during separate telephone
interviews:

Q: Where do you think the championship games should be played?

Randy McPherson, Lowndes coach: "I think you leave it like it is because of
what it does for the communities. It's an opportunity to have a championship
game hosted on your field. It's a tremendous event for your town."

Dave Hunter, Brookwood athletics director: "The ideal situation would be an
indoor facility, equal distance from everybody in Georgia. The Georgia Dome
doesn't meet the centrally located requirements, but it's the only indoor
facility large enough in the state of Georgia."

Q: Why not just move the championship games to the Georgia Dome?

McPherson: "We already have the semis there, so I don't think that'd be
right to have two weeks in a row, where we'd have to drive four hours. The
semis, I don't think they're ever going to leave the Dome. Who cares what
they do in other states? Nobody has the semis at a neutral site. We do and
we love it."

Hunter: "You're talking to somebody who would probably be in favor of that
if you could work out the financial end of it. You have to find a way to cut
the expenses so the teams get a bigger share of the gate. ... You have to
get sponsorships some way to get the teams that participate a bigger piece
of the financial pie. The overriding opinion in my region --- and we voted
8-0 in favor of neutral sites --- is fairness. I played for five state
championships in my career, not once was I at home. ... And that's to say
nothing of the expense. This year at Lowndes, we spent $8,500, and we
weren't extravagant at all. What's fair about that?"

Q: What are the advantages for teams hosting the finals in their own
stadium?

McPherson: "We'd rather play at home, but when it really comes down to it,
the field is the same size. You have to have the stadium, [and] there might
be an advantage and there might not."

Hunter: "The kids sleep in their own bed. They have their own fans. They
don't have to go on the bus and travel far. They do the same thing they do
every day. It's psychological as much as anything. I wouldn't know any coach
that would tell you there's not an advantage."

Q: What are the advantages of the finals being at a neutral site?"

McPherson: "I don't see any at all. None."

Hunter: "One team doesn't have the unfair advantage of playing at home. One
team doesn't have all the travel expenses. You [currently] get 50 cents a
mile. That's what the GHSA allows, and that doesn't go very far. The
visiting team has expenses taken out of the gate. The home team also gets
the concession money, which is a wash in a big game. But I'm sure Lowndes
made more in concessions than they spent on security and ticket-takers and
things like that. If it were in the Georgia Dome, would it be unfair for
Lowndes to travel to the Georgia Dome to play Brookwood? Yeah. The GHSA has
to find a way to make sure it's not a deterrent to play the game there.

Q: Is there an acceptable compromise in this debate?

McPherson: "You know, going back to the advantages in the neutral site ...
the games are on TV. You're not going to have a bigger crowd at those games;
there ain't no way. If you want an alternative, I think the GHSA minimum
seating requirements was good. That's what all this was brought up for;
that's what this is about."

Hunter: "I can't answer that. I think the compromise right now is the
neutral site. In GHSA, our membership always reacts after we act. The state
office sends out surveys, and we get half back. When we act, then everybody
screams bloody murder. Is there a compromise? I thought the compromise was
neutral sites, and I think we should try it."

Q: Should there be home-field advantage in the state's biggest games?

McPherson: "I don't know if there should be or whatever, but that's the way
it's been for how many years? That's just a part of it. When we played on
the road, when we walked in their stadium at Parkview, we had our half full.
We sold our tickets. It felt good walking in Parkview and having our half
full with our people at four in the afternoon. I think all advantages went
out the window then."

Hunter: "No."

Q: If the current system works, why change it?

McPherson: "If it ain't broke, why fix it? I bet we generate more money in
the South for championship games and playoffs."

Hunter: "Any system would work once you get there because you're just so
glad to be there. If they say we have to play on a parking lot, we'll go
play, if that's how it's designed. But who's to say it can't be better?
That's like saying the tax system works now, so let's not consider the fair
tax system. Just because it's worked. It worked because our membership has
been loyal to what the bylaws ask you to do. Nobody has had a better
alternative."

Q: Are there any other venues that should be considered to host all the
championship games besides the Georgia Dome?

McPherson: "No. I don't want the championship games at a neutral site, so
the answer to that question would be no."

Hunter: "I don't know. I'm not familiar with other places. ... I'm sure
there are some other stadiums state-wide, but I think we ought to be
flexible. If Lowndes and Valdosta are playing for the state championship, it
shouldn't be in the Georgia Dome. But should it be at one of those schools?
No."

Q: Is this a metro Atlanta vs. South Georgia debate?

McPherson: "I think so. How far is metro Atlanta from the Dome?"

Hunter: "No. It appears that way because so many Class AAAAA schools are in
metro Atlanta. That's why it appears that way."

Q: Any last thoughts on this issue?

McPherson: "I've been on the road and I've been at home. I know it was a
real special thing for Parkview to host the title games they've hosted, and
it certainly was special for us to host the games we hosted. I don't see any
problem with it."

Hunter: "My biggest thing is fairness. I also think the weather at that time
of year will be a consideration to play indoors. Thirdly, the cost. In my
opinion, fairness is the overriding issue."

OTHER ITEMS ON THE GHSA AGENDA
By CRAIG CUSTANCE
Mar. 13 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Believe it or not, today's Georgia High School Association executive
committee meeting won't be just six hours of debate on where to hold the
football championships. The issue is important, but it isn't foremost on the
agenda, GHSA executive director Ralph Swearngin said.

"There are some very important eligibility issues we have to iron out," he
said. "There are so many new academic programs that are coming in, we just
have to make sure that our eligibility rules are keeping up with the
eligibility issues."

Other highlights from the agenda:

•Proposed changes in the volleyball playoff format, potentially increasing
the number of teams in the playoffs.

•Proposal to evaluate school size, ensuring the population numbers used
during reclassification are current.

•Consideration to hire an investigative officer for the GHSA office.

•A potential Constitution change allowing the executive director to assign
the number of playoff teams based on region size.

•And, of course, the football title game debate will be rehashed. A
compromise proposal from the football committee is on the agenda.

For coaches and fans concerned about transferring in high school sports, as
well as those who suspect recruiting at the high school level, the
investigative officer hire is an intriguing agenda item.

But Swearngin said he doubts the proposal will get very far. For one, there
are more pressing staff needs in the GHSA's office in Thomaston.

Swearngin said the association is hoping to become a paperless organization,
relying on the electronic transfer of information between its members and
the home office. The only problem? There isn't anyone on staff who can
handle the technological know-how an initiative like that would require.

For him, that is a more urgent need than an investigative hire — especially
since the GHSA rarely conducts more than one or two serious transfer
investigations each year.

Executive committee member Dave Hunter sees another problem with hiring an
officer to track transfers.

"I'm going to be open-minded about it," he said. "But it's tough to
legislate morals and ethics."
