SPARTANS PLAY 3 REGION GAMES THIS WEEK

SPARTANS OVER PACE ACADEMY KNIGHTS 9-5 The Spartans captured their second road win in a row [Saturday] downing the Pace Academy Knights 9-5. Ryan Griffin threw a fantastic complete game to get his first victory of the young season to go along with 2 hits, and Landon Bennett hit his second homer of the season, a two run shot in the 6th inning [photo below]. Senior catcher Brock Bennett pegged another runner attempting to steal 2nd base and also gunned down a baserunner who strayed too far from first base. Lots of kudos to go around in this one as the hits were plentiful and the defense continues to improve with each game.
The Spartans (5-2, 1-0) will need to carry this momentum into the week as they face 3 important 8-AA region contests.
RYAN GRIFFIN HITS, PITCHES GAC TO WIN Mar. 19 Gwinnett Daily Post
ATLANTA — Ryan Griffin pitched a complete game to lead GAC to a 9-5 against Pace Academy on Saturday. Griffin also went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Spartans (5-2). Landon Bennett went 3-for-5 with a homer, triple, and three RBIs. Patrick Savage went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while Lee Chapple went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

SPARTANS OVER STARS 5-1
2006 region play opened up [Thursday] as the Spartans traveled to Lilburn to take on the Providence Stars. It took eight innings to get it done, but the Spartans brought home a very nice 5-1 region road win to get the 8-AA portion of their schedule off on the right foot.
Landon Bennett led the way offensively for the Spartans, going 3 for 4 on the night including a single in the final inning. Also in the eighth, Brock Bennett singled, Dillon Geraghty singled and bagged 2 rbi's, Lee Chapple singled in another run, and Brent Burrows base hit scored the final run of the day. Taylor Wood (2 hits), John Wood (1 hit) and Patrick Savage (double) also contibuted hits.
Defensively, Brock Bennett had another stellar game behind the plate, putting another notch on his catcher's mitt by gunning down yet another ill-fated steal attempt. John Wood also made a huge defensive play in the 7th, gunning down a runner at the plate from his left field position who tried to score from second base on a base hit.
On the bump, Taylor Wood continued his good work, throwing 6 2/3 innings, striking out 10, surrendering 4 hits versus no walks and no earned runs. Sophomore Brent Burrows cashed in on the win, getting the final out of the 7th and closing out the game in the eighth.
GAC BREAKS THROUGH IN THE EIGHTH INNING By Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer Mar. 17 Gwinnett Daily Post
LILBURN — Greater Atlanta Christian used some good pitching and a little luck to open its region with a 5-1, eight-inning win over rival Providence Christian on Thursday.
"That's the way GAC-Providence games always go," GAC head coach Cliff Shelton said. "They're always tough battles that could go either way.
"This is a big rivalry for us, and it's played the way a rivalry should be, with lots of good, competitive play on the field."
Both teams got great pitching and defense as they battled to a 1-1 tie after seven innings, but then the wheels fell off for the Stars (4-4, 0-1) in the eighth.
The Spartans (4-2, 1-0) loaded the bases with a bunt single, a single and a hit batsman with two outs in the inning.
Dillon Geraghty came up and hit it off the handle of the bat up the middle just beyond second base. The Providence shortstop fielded it and tried to toss it to the second baseman for the inning-ending put out, but the runner was called safe in a bang-bang play.
On the play, with some heads-up base running, the runners on second and third both came in to score to give the Spartans the lead. GAC would add two more in the inning to run the lead to 5-1, before handing the ball over to pitcher Brent Burrows to seal the win.
"We've got some lessons that need to be learned," Providence head coach Adam Cantrell said. "Overall, I'm not upset with the guys' effort against a really good pitcher, but we need to do a better job reacting if the ball bounces against us and not let it effect the next play. We didn't do that tonight in the last inning and it just sort of snowballed on us."
"I'm proud of how my guys bounced back after giving up the lead in the seventh," Shelton said. "We've had some tough losses so far this year and they could have just said 'here we go again' and folded up their tents, but they came out and did what we needed for the win."
Neither starter figured in the decision in spite of good performances.
GAC's Taylor Wood nearly tossing the complete game, going 62/3 innings with nine strikeouts and no walks before giving up an unearned run in the seventh and handing off to Burrows. Providence's Joe Hammond pitched 5 2/3, striking out five and only giving up the one unearned run in the fourth inning.
Providence had an opportunity to win without extra innings, but they had a base runner thrown out at the plate in the seventh by John Wood in left.
"I saw the left fielder bobble the ball out there so I sent him, but then he made a perfect throw to get him at the plate," Cantrell said.
"I think that might have been his best throw all season," Shelton said.
The win gets the Spartans off on the right track as they try to unseat Buford as the Region 8-AA champions.
"We lost to (Providence) last year to start the season and then went and had a really poor showing at East Hall in the next game, so we just hope to take some momentum into our region play from this game," Shelton said.

SPARTANS RUN INTO HALE-STORM AT WALKER
Walker Wolverine and Princeton signee David Hale was a one man wrecking crew Monday night in Marietta, leading his team in a dramatic come from behind win over the Spartans 7-6 in eight innings. At the plate, Hale homered twice to gather 5 rbi's on the night and scored the winning run in the eighth inning to add to his heroics. And by the way, he also pitched 6 innings, registering 12 strikeouts and holding the Spartans to 1 run after coming on in relief in the 3rd inning.
The night started out well for the Spartans as they jumped on the Wolverine starting pitcher for 5 runs in the first two innings. Brent Burrows and Lee Chapple collected 3 rbi's in the first inning, knocking in Mark Edwards (BB), Landon Bennett (single) and Patrick Savage (single). The good work at the plate continued in the second inning as two Wolverine errors led to Edwards and Bennett reaching safely once again, and Patrick Savage and John Wood collecting the rbi's as the Spartans took a 5-1 lead after two innings. In the fifth, Lee Chapple would reach base on a single, and sophomore Michael Carothers, in his first appearance of the season, brought Lee home with a double down the left field line to wrap up the scoring for the Spartans.
Although another late inning loss for the Spartans, there were lots of positives to build on. Patrick Savage got his first start at first base and played solid defensively. Brock Bennett nailed yet another ill-fated steal attempt (third on the season) and sophomore pitcher Brent Burrows threw 5 quality innings in his longest outing of the season, striking out 6 Wolverines. Last and certainly not least, the Spartan defense had their first error free game of the season, converting 13 of 13 opportunities into putouts.
Walker 7, GAC 6 MARIETTA — Greater Atlanta Christian lost a heart-breaker to Walker 7-6 in eight innings on Monday. Walker hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, then scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. Patrick Savage was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Landon Bennett was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs for the Spartans (3-2). [Mar. 14 Gwinnett Daily Post]

GAC parent Doug Curd reports: The GACS Boys Lacrosse Team played a very skilled and talent ladened team from The Lovett School on Friday night at Spartan Stadium. The final score had Lovett on top 11 to 3. The GAC scoring was led by William Shuford's two goals and one from Ryan Terrana. Their record now stands at 4 wins and 3 losses in this inaugural season.
On Thursday 3/23, they play Northview at Northview 7 PM, Saturday 3/25 they host Pace Academy at Spartan Stadium 11 AM, and 3/27 Decatur plays at Spartan Stadium 6 PM.
The GAC Boys Lacrosse team played a very good Roswell Hornet team in Roswell Tuesday night. The news was not good. GAC lost 10 to 2. The swarming Hornet defense was appropriately named in the game last night. GAC had very few scoring chances until Thomas Bolton found the back of the Roswell net late in the fourth quarter and later added another. Most of the game was played at the GAC end of the field.

SWEEPING STARS: #8-RANKED PROVIDENCE BOYS TOP GAC IN OVERTIME By Brandon Brigman, Staff Writer Mar. 19 Gwinnett Daily Post
LILBURN — It had everything a heated neighborhood rivalry between Greater Atlanta Christian and Providence Christian Academy is supposed to have.
Players running into other players, bodies flying from hits, six yellow cards given out and two red cards resulting in ejections, and the added bonus of overtime in Saturday's boys soccer game.
When the dust settled, eighth-ranked Providence limped away with a 2-1 win over GAC in a key Region 8-AA game...
"They manhandled us twice last year and we lost to them in the region tournament in overtime, so the guys were hungry for this since last year," Providence boys head coach Todd Henry said.
The win is the Stars' first over the Spartans in their second year of spring varsity competition. The win also moves Providence to 6-4 overall and 1-0 region play and have won five of its last seven games.
The loss snaps a two-game unbeaten streak for GAC and moves them to 4-6-1 overall and 2-1 in region play.
In the second minute of overtime, Jon Demonbreun hit a shot from the left side of the goal over the Spartans' goalkeeper Matt Wolfe for the go-ahead goal. The Stars' defense did the rest for the final eight minutes of overtime to secure the victory.
"I was really proud of them. We just had a little bit of bad luck. I have no complaints and can't fault their effort," GAC boys head coach Thom Jacquet said. "We'll get it together and go at it next week."
With the loss of a player midway with through the first half because of a red card, GAC was forced to play with 10 players for most of the game. The Spartans were able to hold their own until the final 20 minutes of regulation when the Stars began to gain momentum.
Providence had three attempts for goals, but it wasn't until the 70th minute when Luke Gettmann's free kick put the ball in front of the goal. Garrett Strysko tried to head the ball in, but Wolfe was there to make a great deflection. However, Jay Collins didn't give up on the play and headed the ball in to tie the game 1-1.
Matt Carroll scored GAC's only goal of the game in the first five minutes of action...

SWEEPING STARS: #2-RANKED PROVIDENCE GIRLS CRUISE 4-0 By Brandon Brigman, Staff Writer Mar. 19 Gwinnett Daily Post
LILBURN — It had everything a heated neighborhood rivalry between Greater Atlanta Christian and Providence Christian Academy is supposed to have... In the girls game, Sarah Jordan came back from a one-game suspension to lead Providence to a 4-0 win over GAC...
Jordan quickly made up for lost time against GAC. After being red carded in a game in South Carolina, Jordan had to sit out the Stars' last game against Holy Innocents'.
In the first 30 seconds of Saturday's game at Providence Christian Academy, the sophomore made up for missed time, scoring the first of her three goals in the Stars' 4-0 win over the rival Spartans. Providence, who is ranked No. 2 in Class AA/A improved to 7-1-2 overall and 2-0 in Region 8. The defending region champions and state runner-up have not lost in their last nine games and the team's only loss was in the season opener to Class AAAAA's Norcross on penalty kicks.
GAC moves to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the region. The loss snaps the Spartans' two-game winning streak, but the team has won four of its last six games.
Jordan got the quick goal after midfielder Lizzie Hamersly delivered a nice pass to the forward. Spartans goalkeeper Gillian Potts came out of goal to try and stop her, but Jordan slid and kicked the ball past her for the score.
"Those two are our most exciting and dangerous players," Providence girls head coach Jonny Williamson said. "They set the tone for us early."
Jordan added her second goal of the game in the 10th minute, shooting a high, hard shot from the top of the box to make the game 2-0.
Jordan tried to add her third goal of the half when she shot the ball as Potts came out of goal however, Potts deflected the ball and Cassi Flowers was there for a line-drive shot with no one in goal for the score.
GAC opened the second half with two quick attempts for goal, but couldn't convert.
Sarah Brummett nearly had a goal when she kicked it to the left of the upright. Brummett had another chance to score when she was one-on-one with Stars' goalkeeper Leigha Terry, but Terry made a great sliding stop to prevent the score.
"We didn't really wake up until the second half," GAC girls head coach Troy Bendickson said. "Sarah just had an off day and couldn't find the back of the net. I think if we could have made those goals it could have changed the momentum of the game."
Jordan got her hat trick in the final five minutes of the game with another nice pass from Hamersly. The midfielder dribbled the ball up the middle and passed in the perfect spot to allow Jordan to get past the defenders and when Potts came out of goal to challenge Jordan, she pushed the ball past her for the goal.
"They've got a good team that passes and controls the ball really well," Bendickson said. "Those two combined work really well together."
Jordan's three goals give her 20 for the season in eight games played. Providence out shot GAC 16-6.
"Overall I thought this was our best game as a team," Williamson said. "I think our chemistry is getting better."
Potts finished with five saves for GAC and Terry had six for Providence.

I just wanted to alert you to the fact that there will be NO free athletic physicals given by Promina this spring (2006) as they have done in years past.
I'm disappointed that Promina is not providing this service for us as they have done the past few years, but that is their prerogative. We have had a good relationship with Promina for several years, and they have been good to us.
What does all of this mean? Delores Ware from Promina tells me that Promina will have what they are referring to as a 'wrap up' event in the summer. They will schedule a date in late July and provide the same service (free of charge) for those athletes who want to take advantage of that opportunity. Promina has a difficult time obtaining qualified physicians and nurses to volunteer their services at that time. Delores will call me when Promina's sports medicine committee decides on an exact date in July for this examination process to occur, and I will post this date on my athletic director website.
Coaches and parents should be aware of the following rule stipulated by the GHSA regarding physical forms. Section 2.21 of the GHSA By-Laws states:
"The administrative head of each school shall have on file in the school office a certificate of an annual physical examination by a licensed medical physician, a doctor of osteopathic medicine or a physician's assistant indicating the student is approved for participation in athletic activities before that student may try-out, participate in practice or conditioning drills, or participate in interscholastic contests. NOTE: Any physical examination taken on or after April 1, in the preceding year will be accepted for the following GHSA school year."
I would strongly urge parents who have children who desire to participate on our fall sports teams in 2006 to do their best to schedule appointments with your family doctor just as soon after April 1, 2006 as you possibly can. If you wait until just before a fall 'try-out' to schedule a doctor's appointment it may be too late. And remember…athletes CANNOT try-out, practice, condition or participate in an interscholastic contest without this physical form on file in the athletic office.
Parents…when your child has completed his/her physical examination please save a copy of the form for your records and then bring a copy to Kathy Sisco in the athletic office. Thank you.
Tim Vick Director of Athletics 770-243-2280 (office) 678-908-8033 (cell) Tvick@greateratlantachristian.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Burton Subject: Save this date! Wednesday, May 10
Please mark your calendars for a special upcoming event involving the GAC community. On Wednesday, May 10, at 4 pm, our varsity baseball team has been invited to play in a benefit game against Wesleyan at TURNER FIELD. When we return from spring break, tickets will be available for $10 each (general admission only). Our game will precede the Georgia vs.Georgia Tech game at 7pm that evening. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. All tickets are also tax deductible.
Both GAC and Wesleyan are being asked to promote the event and to sell as many tickets as possible. It will be heavily promoted by the media and will provide a ton of good publicity for our school. For the GAC community, it will be a fun afternoon at the ballpark to support Coach Cliff Shelton and our Spartans. There will be some special incentives that day for students to be announced later as well as an early dismissal for students going to the game.
In the past, when our football teams have played at the Georgia Dome, we have had huge crowds. We are hoping for a similar turnout for this special baseball game this year.
Plan to come out to the ball game and to the crowd. Buy you some peanuts and Cracker Jacks. You won't care if you never get back. Root, root, root for the Spartan team. If they don't win, it's a shame. For it's 1, 2, 3 strikes, you're out at the old ballgame.

GHSA NEWS
FOOTBALL FINALS SWITCHED BACK TO HOST SCHOOLS By Will Hammock, Sports Editor Mar. 14 Gwinnett Daily Post
Slightly more than six months ago, the Georgia High School Association's Executive Committee voted to move the 2006 state football championship games to neutral sites.
On Monday, the vote went the other way.
After a new proposal was brought forth by the Football Committee, the Executive Committee voted to hold the state finals at one of the participating schools' stadiums, as has been the case in the past. Suggestions were made to hold the championship games at the Georgia Dome or other neutral sites that were geographically between the two participating football teams, but neither won out.
In attempt to make the game more neutral, the GHSA now will take over the administration of the state championship game and will provide announcers, ticket takers and other staff. Also the home team won't be allowed to sell any spirit wear. Instead the GHSA will sell its merchandise.
So it's a neutral game in some regards, but it still will be played at a participating school's stadium.
"Personally I don't think (the new ruling makes the game neutral)," said Brookwood athletic director Dave Hunter, a member of the Executive Committee and a proponent of neutral site finals. "I don't think anybody in their right mind can say that's neutral because one team has to travel, pay for travel, not sleep in their own beds.
"But that's my personal view. From a team standpoint, I'm a team player. We'll be fine with. If that's what the majority wants, that's what we'll do."
The higher seed will host this year's state championship game unless the two seeds are equal, which isn't a change from the past. But a new addition is that a coin flip will determine the host, a change from the past when a predetermined "H" in the bracket settled matchups of equal seeding. The same scenario is true for this season's quarterfinals if two teams have the same seed.
"We've obviously done it both ways, we've played (state championship games) away and at home," Buford head coach Jess Simpson said. "It sure is a neat atmosphere both ways. Now for anyone to say there's not a home-field advantage is crazy. But that's high school football. That's the way we've always done it. And it's great for the community that gets to host."
The GHSA's top committee also set its dates for football to start this year. Aug. 1 is an administrative day and teams can begin in shorts and pads on Aug. 2. Full-pad workouts can begin Aug. 7.
Some other decisions made by the GHSA on Monday were: The starting date for the 2006-2007 basketball season was moved back from Nov. 20 to Nov. 18, to allow Thanksgiving tournaments an earlier start. Baseball teams now are allowed one preseason game with unlimited substitutions. ____________________________________________________________________ THE BEST OF GAC ANNOUNCEMENTS [reprinted from www.greateratlantachristian.org]

ATLANTA — Seimone Augustus keeps piling up the awards. The only thing she's got left to do before leaving LSU is take her team to a national championship. Augustus was a unanimous choice as player of the year on The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference team released Tuesday, the second straight year she's claimed that honor.
Mickie DeMoss, who guided Kentucky to its first NCAA women's tournament since 1999, was named coach of the year. Tennessee freshman Candace Parker was named newcomer of the year on all ballots.
Augustus and teammate Sylvia Fowles were the only unanimous selections to the first team. They were joined by a pair of Georgia players, Tasha Humphrey and Greater Atlanta Christian grad Sherill Baker, and Armintie Price of Mississippi.

Gwinnett population adds 137,825 in five years By Bryan Brooks, Staff Writer Mar. 16 Gwinnett Daily Post
LAWRENCEVILLE - Only 12 counties nationwide grew more than Gwinnett County during the past five years, according to Census estimates released today. From 2000 to 2005 Gwinnett added 137,825 residents, giving it a total population of 726,273 - good enough for 74th largest county in the nation. That's up one spot from the previous year when Gwinnett bypassed DeKalb County on the Census Bureau's top 100 population list to become the second largest county in Georgia. Fulton County is the largest... Gwinnett will hit 1 million residents about 2018. It will happen sooner, though, if Gwinnett continues averaging 27,565 new residents per year like it has since 2000. That amount of newcomers is twice the annual population increase seen by Cobb County to the west. _____________________________________________________________________ SPARTAN PHOTOS ONLINE Martin Photography link http://martinphotography.morephotos.com/mp_includes/index.asp
