Buford Wolves 7 Spartans 6
As is usually the case when these two teams go head to head, and although it
was an especially brutal afternoon weather-wise, the Spartans and Wolves put
on a very good show in Buford today. With both teams coming into this
matchup with unblemished region records (3-0), it figured to be a very close
contest....and it was.

The day started out well for the visitors, as one out singles by Brock
Bennett and Landon Bennett set the stage for Patrick Savages RBI double
which scored Brock and allowed the Spartans to take an early 1-0 lead. The
Wolves would return the favor in the bottom half of the second to knot the
score at 1 each. The Spartans would push another run across in the fourth,
courtesy of John Wood's RBI double which scored Patrick Savage (BB). Buford
would counter again in the bottom half of the fourth with a 2 out rally that
pushed 2 runs across to get the Wolves their first lead of the night @ 3-2.
In the sixth, still trailing 3-2, the Spartans again had a runner on and
Patrick Savage would get his second RBI of the night driving in Landon
Bennett who had reached on a fielders choice.

In the Spartans half of the seventh, with one out, Colton Chapple got things
started by reaching on an error. Coming to the plate with 2 outs and Colton
still at first, the Spartans got another defensive miscue by the Wolves to
put runners at first and second. Landon Bennett came to the plate and
delivered the go ahead RBI, driving Colton in with his single up the middle.
Freshman phenom Patrick Savage followed with a fence rattling double to
bring home Brock Bennett and Landon to give the Spartans a 6-3 lead going
into the bottom of the 7th.

But in the 7th, the Wolves would put together 6 hits to plate 4 runs and
send the Spartans home with a heartbreaking 7-6 loss. Taylor Wood went 6 1/3
innings for the Spartans, striking out 12, surrendering 7 hits and walking
2.

The Spartans (7-3, 3-1) go back to work on Tuesday as they travel to Banks
County for region contest #5.

Spartans 15 Vikings 3
Dillon Geraghty threw a complete game and John Wood had 4 rbi's as the
Spartans cruised to win #7 on the season over East Hall. On a very cold and
rainy night, Dillon held the Viking bats in check the whole way with a good
mix of fast balls and off-speed pitches, striking out 8 and surrendering
only 1 earned run. Offensively, John Wood led the way for the Spartans,
plating 2 runs in the first inning with a nice 2 out, opposite field double.
John would add to his totals later in the game with another 2 rbi double.
Freshman Mark Edwards also collected a few rbi's tonight, driving in 2 runs
late in the game. Landon Bennett continued his good work at the plate,
getting home run #3 on the season with a 2 run shot to left field.

Spartans 10-0 Rabun County
The Spartans took care of business in short order tonight, defeating the
visiting Rabun County Wildcats 10-0 in a run-rule shortened game at Hester
Field. Ryan Griffin got his second win of the season, throwing 6 innings,
surrendering only 1 hit, and striking out 7. Freshman Patrick Savage had
another good night at the plate, going 2 for 3 and driving in 3 runs. Also
picking up RBI's tonight were Lee Chapple, John Wood, Landon Bennett, Ryan
Griffin and Louis Brooks who finished off the game with a 2 run double to
right center field. Wildcat pitching walked 11 Spartans on the night. Mark
Edwards also had an excellent game at shortstop as he single handedly made
all 3 put-outs in the 4th inning.

Gwinnett Daily Post [Post]:

SPARTANS HOST DECATUR TONIGHT AT STADIUM AT 6:00PM

GAC parent Doug Curd reports:
Saturday morning the team beat a very good Pace Academy team 8 to 4 and
stopped a three game losing streak. Blake Guy scored the first GAC goal.
William Shuford had 4 and Thomas Bolton had 3. The defense of Brett Shanley,
Banks Lee, Tyler Boyd, Justin White, Ty Smith, Stephen Harber, and McLaine
Merrick played great all day in front of goalie, Drew Curd, who had a
shutout going until 4 minutes were remaining in the third quarter.

GAC Boys Lacrosse Team lost a tough one last Thursday night when Northview
avenged their earlier last second defeat from the stick of Thomas Bolton and
won 6 to 4. William Shuford had two goals and Thomas Bolton had one.

The team plays their last home game of their inaugural season today (Mar.
27) against Decatur at 6pm at the stadium. The team's record stands at 5
wins and 4 losses.

SPARTANS BEAT WESLEYAN 2-1

SPARTANS HONOR BUFORD'S EDGAR ARROYO AFTER INJURY
By Will Hammock, Sports Editor
Mar. 23 Gwinnett Daily Post

In a way, I know exactly how Buford soccer player Edgar Arroyo feels.

A little more than 16 years ago (man, I'm old), I broke my leg in a soccer
match during my sophomore year of high school. Six months later, I broke the
same leg again, this time the tibia and the fibula. That's when I took up
golf.

It will be a month on Friday since Arroyo broke his right leg during the
Wolves' 2-1 win over Berkmar. His injury was more gruesome than mine because
the bone broke the skin, but the mental issues are the same ones I faced
back then - the questions of "Will I ever play soccer again?" or "If I do
play, will I be the same as before?"

To make it worse, the break came one day before his birthday, which he spent
in ICU, part of a five-day hospital stay.

"I knew when it broke, I knew my senior year was over," Arroyo said. "I
didn't feel any pain or anything at first. I just was yelling, ';Soccer's
over. Soccer's over.' It's hard because soccer's such a big part of my
life."

Arroyo himself is a big part of a young Buford soccer program, off to its
best start ever at 8-3. A key team leader, injured or not, he also was the
Wolves' go-to guy as a center midfielder. A relentless worker, he was the
guy running extra laps, the guy getting his teammates motivated.

Now he only motivates off the field, but his teammates clearly want to do
well for him. They wear wristbands in his honor and their game-day shirts
sport his No. 11. They autographed the Berkmar game ball for him.

He's also gotten well wishes from other schools. Thom Jacquet, the coach of
rival Greater Atlanta Christian, had his players sign a sweatshirt and give
it to Arroyo, who was born in Mexico but moved to Buford as a 5-year-old.

The support has helped him through the early stages of the tough road to
recovery - the initial mental questions, the two surgeries (the latter to
put two rods in his leg) and the temporary use of a wheelchair. Now he faces
four to five months of no use of the leg, followed by rehabilitation.

Arroyo, also the kicker for Buford's football team, hoped to play college
soccer and appeared headed that way. Hopefully some college will still offer
that chance when he's back to 100 percent.

"Edgar's just a kid that loves the game," Buford coach Brandon Manders said.
"He can still have a great comeback story. He has that kind of heart, that
kind of will."

county record. She jumped 11'6" and the old record was 10' 0". The only

ANNALISE PETERS SETS POLE VAULT RECORD AT GWINNETT COUNTY MEET
By Brandon Brigman, Staff Writer
Mar. 26 Gwinnett Daily Post

HOSCHTON — It was a great day for pole vaulters Cameron Cheek and Annalise
Peters at the Gwinnett County Track and Field Championships. Not only did
the duo win county titles, but they also set county records on Saturday.

It had been nearly an hour after all the varsity fields events were done,
leaving Cheek with the stage all to himself at his home field at Mill Creek
High School. After outlasting his toughest competition in Parkview's Michael
Martin and Greater Atlanta Christian's Michael Hughes, Cheek made his
assault on the county record book.

After two misses at 15-9, the junior got some advice from his coach and on
the third try Cheek cleared 15-9 to shatter the old county meet record of
14-0 set back in 1992.

"I'm so excited, I finally PRed," Cheek said. "I've been stuck at 15-6 for a
while and today things just clicked. I think the tail winds really helped."

Cheek's record is the all-time best for any Gwinnett athlete in the pole
vault at any venue.

GAC's Peters had one goal going into the Gwinnett County Track and Field
Championships — she wanted to beat her personal best in the pole vault.

The GAC senior did that and more, setting the new mark at 11-6 to claim the
county title.
"I'm excited about the record. I always compete against myself wherever I
go," Peters said. "I just try to jump as high as I can."

Peters won the pole vault championship her sophomore year, but last year did
not compete. In Saturday's meet, Peters' goal was to clear 11-0, which was
the old county mark set last year by Dacula's Erica Penk and Brookwood's
Kelly Bridges. Penk finished in second with a mark of 10-6 and after Peters
cleared 11-6 she went for it all at 12-1.

Peters nearly cleared 12-1 on her second try and on her third try she tipped
the bar, failing raise the county mark again, but leaving her with another
goal this season.

"If you do it all in one day then there is nothing to look forward to,"
Peters joked. "I guess that's my goal for the next meet."

In addition to Cheek's and Peters' record-setting marks, Israel Machovec set
the county record in the shot put with a throw of 59-6.5. The senior also
won the discus with a throw of 174-9.
On the girls side, Collins Hill's Jackie Drouin set the county record in the
1,600 with a time of 4: 59.24, which is the fastest in the state this season.

Dacula's Eve and Israel Machovec and Collins Hill's Nicole Okolo were the
only three athletes of the day to win two events.

Okolo's titles in the triple jump and long jump are the first for the junior
in those events, but likely won't be the last for her at the Championships
as she's the favorite for the 100 hurdles on Monday when the meet resumes
with the track finals.

"I thought I'd win. I was well prepared and really focused. I had my eye on
the prize today," Okolo said. "There's a lot of really good athletes at the
meet, and I'm just excited to compete in such a great meet like this."

Okolo won the triple jump with a jump of 37-5 and the long jump with a mark
of 17-6.

Machovec was the defending champion in the discus and was looking to claim
her second county title with a record performance, but was unable to keep
her longest throw inbound.

"It feels really good, but I was a little disappointed in my discus throw,"
Machovec said. "My goal was for 140 and I had one good throw, but it went
out of sector."

The sophomore finished with a throw of 131-5 to take the discus title and
won the shot put with a mark of 40-11.

In the high jump, the boys and girls county record was challenged, but
neither jumper was able to break the mark. Providence's Daniel Averso missed
at 6-10.25, but still won the boys high jump with a jump of 6-8.25 . Melanie
Trumbo from Brookwood settled for 5-4 in the girls high jump after not being
able to clear 5-6.

Collins Hill's Nathan Frasier won the boys 1,600-meter run with a time of
4:25.15, T.J. Holiday from Norcross took the long jump title with a jump of
19-9, and Shiloh's Donald Taylor won the triple jump with a jump of 42-4.

At the end of the first day with all the field events complete, Collins Hill
led in the boys and girls team standings. Dacula was second followed by
Grayson and Norcross on the boys side. In the girls, Dacula, Brookwood and
Norcross were behind the Eagles.

SPARTAN BOYS WIN GACS INVITATIONAL ON MARCH 18
Mar. 21 AJC

Several double-winners highlighted Saturday's Greater Atlanta Christian
School Invitational in Norcross, but perhaps the most outstanding
performance was turned in by Providence Christian's Daniel Averso.

Averso cleared a season-high 6 feet, 10 inches in the high jump, the top
performance of the season in Georgia. His winning height was a half-foot
better than the second-place competitor.

Greater Atlanta Christian boys and Decatur girls won the team championships
in the 14-school meet.

The host Spartans were led by Justin Schneider, who won the 800 (1:58.13)
and 1,600 meters (4:30.09), and was second in the high jump (6-4). Hunter
Treadway won the 110 hurdles (15.29) and was second in the 300 hurdles
(40.98). Frank Bolling was second behind Schneider in the 800 (1:59.80) and
1,600 (4:32.22). Michael Hughes placed second in the 100 (11.36) and pole
vault (15-0). Meko McCray was second in the long jump (20-10) and third in
the triple jump (40-8 3/4)...

GHSA NEWS

PROPOSAL WOULD SHIFT TENNIS FROM SPRING TO FALL SEASON
By DAVID PURDUM
Mar. 21 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Georgia High School Association is considering moving the tennis season
from the spring to the fall. At the suggestion of coaches from Region 6-AA,
Atlanta Public Schools athletics coordinator Fred Price made the proposal at
last Monday's GHSA Executive Committee meeting. The proposal was voted down,
but Price asked that a survey be taken to determine the feelings of the
state's coaches. The surveys have been sent out with an April 15 deadline
for receiving responses.

Price said some coaches think they would have a larger pool of athletes to
choose from during the fall. He also said that daylight-saving time will
help conserve energy by limiting the amount of time lights are needed.

The change would help alleviate some player conflicts that occur during the
more prestigious United States Tennis Association spring season. USTA
tournaments offer a higher level of competition and more exposure.

"I've never had a college contact me about a girl because of how she played
in a high school event," Brookwood girls tennis coach Angie McLane said. "If
they are going to consider playing in college, they need to play in the USTA
tournaments."

With the USTA season conflicting, often players have to make a difficult
decision about which events to attend. McLane said her top players take
turns playing in the USTA tournaments and the high school matches.

Coaches like Brookwood boys coach Heath Hinton, who also coaches football,
also would be affected by the shift of seasons.

"For personal reasons, I would rather see it stay in the spring," Hinton
said. "I enjoy coaching both sports. But if more kids would get involved and
play tennis if it was in the fall, then obviously that would be a good
thing."

THE BEST OF GAC ANNOUNCEMENTS [reprinted from
www.greateratlantachristian.org]

Two of our Lady Spartan basketball players were recognized by the AJC for
their outstanding performances this year.  D'Nay Daniels was named to the
AJC First-Team All- State Team and Kiara Swanier was named Honorable Mention
All-State.  These are outstanding honors and please congratulate these girls
for this recognition.

Today [Mar. 27], Page Love, a sports nutritionist with Nutri Fit Sport
Therapy, Inc., will be on our campus to discuss the very popular and
sometimes controversial topic of sports nutrition. This event is open to all
GACS families. This will be a great opportunity for athletes and parents to
learn the latest about sports nutrition. This event will take place in the
Church Auditorium at 7:30.  It is sponsored by the Spartan Football Mom's
Club.

All Ladies of GACS are invited to the L.A.C.E. General Meeting/Dessert and
Coffee on Tuesday, March 28th at 1:00pm.  It will be held in the Wista
Worthen Room in the Student/Family Center and the speaker will be GACS
counselor, Donna Holladay. She will speak on the life and challenges of
today's students in our society. Reservations are not necessary…just come
and enjoy tasty desserts, fun fellowship, and door prizes!

From the desk of TIM VICK: GOODWILL TO ALL MEN
There is an XL black Wilson's leather jacket in my office. It was left in
the Bradford gym during basketball season and no one has claimed it.  Should
no one claim it soon…it will be sent to Goodwill.

From the desk of DR. MISTY OVERMAN:
GAC has invited the founder of the first anti-porn site called xxxchurch.com
to speak to our  high school students on guarding their hearts and minds.
They understand that this poison can hook them in just 3 days to a
pornography addiction. With facts and awareness, students can become more
cautious of its long-term effects and devastation. Their "edgy" lingo and
methods may seem drastic to you, but I assure you, they speak clearly, the
language that the children understand and are faced with daily.

I invite you, our junior high parents, to attend a parent session on April
13th following the high school presentation at 2:00. While it is as
important to talk with our junior high students as our high school students,
it is a subject we must broach carefully and appropriately. Our current plan
is to have a specific time with high school mentors and the 8th grade boys a
few days after the high school presentation. These students will be guided
through a discussion. If you have questions, feel free to email Dr. Overman,
Rebekah Gilliard, Chaplin Jon Owen or Community Relations Director, Jill
Morris. Please see our website for updates regarding this event on April
13th.

From the desk of JILL MORRIS:
You are all invited to the new Aquatic Center groundbreaking on Thursday,
March 30th at 1:00pm.
We are also excited.  With 11 lanes, a seating area, locker rooms, wet
classroom and offices, our new facility will be awesome. All students in
Elementary and Junior High are being asked to attend.  All swimmers on the
Junior High, Junior Varsity and Varsity team are asked to attend.  Village
and Senior High schedules were in conflict with this time, but with limited
space, the conflict worked out for the best. The ceremony will be short –
but memorable for a team that has managed two top finishes in the state for
boys and girls since 2002 and girls that have taken 3rd or 4th in A-AAAA at
the Georgia State Championship since 2003.
