GAC TO GET ITS OWN AQUATICS CENTER By Buddy Pinkston Mar. 30 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greater Atlanta Christian will break ground at 1 p.m. today on a $4.7-million aquatics center.
Construction of the 11-lane campus pool will remove the swim team's burden of late-night practices miles from GAC's Norcross campus. For 11 years, the Spartans have worked out during available times at SwimAtlanta, finishing sessions as late as 9:30 p.m.
Coach Karen Blackman said the facility will encourage greater participation and support for a program that has been competitive in the small-school ranks.
"There have been a lot of our students who wanted to be in the program but couldn't because of the horrible hours," she said. "It's a physical strain and also an academic one when kids are getting home at 10:30."
GAC draws students from all over metro Atlanta, and Blackmon said some swimmers live as far away as Jonesboro.
The chance to compete in front of classmates and other supportive fans also will boost the program, Blackman said. She hopes construction is completed in time for some meets there next season.
She sees it as a multi-use facility that will benefit faculty, other sports teams' training and rehabilitation, and the school's summer camps."
"This building will promote what we stand for in terms of health and wellnesss for our whole school," said Blackman, coach of the team from its first full season in 1996.
GAC's girls team has placed in the top four of the state Class A-AAAA meet four straight years.
The pool will be next to the football stadium on the 74-acre campus. The architectural firm of Collins Cooper Carusi designed the building, and contractor R.J. Griffin is handling construction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
