SPARTANS PLAY #2-RANKED BUFORD TOMORROW AT HOME
Coach Cliff Shelton's squad needs a region victory at Rabun County today and
then return rested for tomorrow's showdown with No. 2 (AA) Buford. The
Wolves are undefeated in region games (11-0) and 15-2 overall. Buford edged
the Spartans 7-6 in the first meeting in March. Here are the current region
standings according to
www.GaSports.com:
School / Region Record

The top four teams in our Region 8-AA with the best won-loss region records
will earn a berth in the State AA Tournament. GACS has seven region games
remaining on the schedule. The May 10 game against Wesleyan at Turner Field
does not count in the region standings.

Spartans 15, East Hall 0
The Spartans got off to a fast start tonight, scoring 12 runs in the first
inning and finishing off the visiting Vikings in 4 innings 15-0. Brent
Burrows threw the complete 4 inning contest and pocketed the shutout
striking out 5 Vikings and surrendering only 2 hits and walking 1.
At the plate, the Spartan pounded out 13 hits, 8 of which came in the 12 run
first inning. Senior John Wood had 4 rbi's in the first inning, 3 of which
came on a 3 run homer to left field. Patrick Savage also had 4 rbi's in the
first on two singles. Brock Bennett, Dillon Geraghty, and Colton Chapple
also added rbi singles in the first inning. Lee Chapple and Louis Brooks
also added rbi hits in the 4th inning, and Ian Graham added a lead off
single.
The Spartans (11-6, 7-4) are back at it on Monday with a long road trip to
Rabun County. The team returns home on Tuesday for the second matchup with
rival and region leader Buford.
Spartans 1, Providence 4
Providence starter Joe Hammond threw 5 innings of 1 hit baseball Tuesday
afternoon at Hester field and led his team to a 4-1 victory over the
Spartans. Spartan shortstop Mark Edwards led off the game with a base hit
and moved to second base on a wild pitch with no outs. But, as would be
indicative of their struggles on this day, Edwards was left stranded at
second base at the end of the inning. The Spartans could only manage 2 hits
on the day as Brock Bennett would add a single in the 7th inning.
The Spartans did not fare much better in the field, as 4 errors led to 2
unearned runs. Taylor Wood took his second loss in as many outings as he
threw the complete game, striking out 6, walking 1, surrendering 7 hits and
2 earned runs.
The stories below appeared in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ["AJC"] or
Gwinnett Daily Post ["Post"]:

GAC parent Doug Curd reports:
The Spartans Boys Lacrosse lost to St. Pius on Monday night 6 to 2. The
defense for St. Pius played very tough against our guys and we trailed 5 to
0 at the end of the first half. McLaine Merrick got the Spartans on the
board with a goal in the third quarter. William Shuford had a goal in the
fourth quarter, but GAC had a difficult time the entire game getting any
offense going.
The team's record now stands at 5 wins and 6 losses with the last game set
for Saturday, April 22, at 10:00am at Decatur.

[Apr. 12 Post]
GAC boasts its very own 'Odd Couple'
By DAVID PURDUM
Apr. 12 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Michael Hutchinson and Kyle Walker make up Greater Atlanta Christian's No. 1
doubles team. That's all they have in common.
Hutchinson, a senior, is 6-foot-2 and has grown into his lanky frame by
staying away from soda pop. Walker stands just 5-foot-2 but can eat more
pizza than any of his teammates. Hutchinson has two state championship
rings; Walker has one. Even their uniforms were different in Tuesday's
rematch of last year's AA finals against Pace Academy. Walker, a sophomore,
sported a red jersey and a Tennessee Volunteers cap.
"We let him have it about that," said Hutchinson, a Georgia fan who wore a
white jersey against Pace.
On the court, the Spartan duo's contrasting styles complement each other
perfectly. Hutchinson is a dominating force at the net and boasts a powerful
serve. If a shot does manage to scoot over his head, Walker is seemingly
always there. They disposed of Pace's doubles team of David Darland and
Jeffrey Marx in swift fashion 6-1, 7-5 for their 14th consecutive victory.
"It's really funny to watch," GAC assistant coach Brad Schultz. "Michael
wasn't that tall last year so it didn't look that strange, but now it's
ridiculous. Looking at them on the court, it's really odd. It looks like
father and son playing."
Bolstered by Hutchinson and Walker's victory, GAC bested Pace 3-2 and is in
good position to contend for its fourth state title in the past six years.
In fact, Schultz feels better about this group's chances than he did last
year, despite having only two seniors, No. 1 singles player Dillon Loyd and
Hutchinson.
"Last year, I don't think we played a lot of people that we felt were our
strongest competition during the year," explained Schultz, "and this year we
have.
"We know how we measure up this year."
At 14-1, the Spartans seem to measure up just fine. The AA regional tennis
tournament begins [Tuesday] at Buford.
GAC (11-4) won the match 4-1.
Boys: No. 1 singles, Pace's John Harden defeated Loyd, 6-2, 6-1; No. 2
singles, GAC's Chad Day def. Alex Satterly 6-1, 6-0; No. 3 singles, GAC's
Will Lewis def. Brandon Grant 6-1, 6-2; No. 2 doubles, Pace's Jesse
Taylor-Justin Snyder def. Justin Lumsden-Mason Deal 4-6, 7-5, (10-6).
Girls: No. 1 singles, GAC's Christy Couch; No. 2 singles, GAC's Abbey
Witwer; No. 1 doubles, GAC's Caroline Greenwood-Abby Rising, No. 2 doubles,
GAC's Brooke Lewis-Christy Howard.
