SPARTANS ARE REGION CHAMPS!
GAC boys make late rally to claim region championship
By Scott Smith, Staff Correspondent
Apr. 22 Gwinnett Daily Post
NORCROSS — The Area 8-AA/A boys champion was crowned 90 minutes earlier than
originally anticipated as the matchup between Greater Atlanta Christian and
Buford was moved ahead due to weather concerns Friday afternoon.
The earlier start didn't hamper the intensity of the match as GAC scored
twice in the final 15 minutes to rally for a 4-3 win and the area
championship.
"The last 20 minutes or so, it was all us," GAC head coach Thom Jacquet
said. "We knew it was kind of going to be a shootout but we felt like we
could score on them. I said at halftime if this is what we want we have to
go out there and get it."
Buford's Misael Martinez was one of the reasons Jacquet thought the game
might be a shootout as he came into the match with a county-best 48 goals.
Martinez didn't disappoint as he scored goal 49 in the first half and No. 50
in the second, but a red card on Buford late in the second half turned the
tide in favor of the Spartans.
Trailing 3-2, GAC (8-8-1) pressured the Buford defense when Chris Thomas
corralled a rebound off of keeper Wilfrido Chavez in front of the goal and
took a shot.
With Chavez out of the play, Edgar Barrios instinctively swatted the shot
down, prompting the official to red card Barrios for a hand ball in the box
and award GAC a penalty kick.
With 15:20 left to play, junior Sam Arthur, who has already committed to
South Carolina, calmly stuck the ball past Chavez for a 3-3 tie.
"Every time we play Buford, it's always hard-fought," Arthur said, who
finished with two goals and two assists. "We had to come back last game
against Providence and we played as a team at the end. I think we wanted it
more than they did."
The red card forced Buford (12-6) to play down one man and GAC took
advantage, constantly pressuring Buford's defense. Nine minutes later, GAC's
pressure paid off when Arthur hit Thomas on a nice cross in front of the
goal and the freshman put it home with 6:58 left for the eventual
game-winner.
"Those are the two guys that can score goals for us," Jacquet said of Arthur
and Thomas. "Its been like that for most of the year."
Despite being down a man, Buford made one last charge with about three
minutes to play when John Strohmeyer of GAC was whistled while defending
Martinez just outside the box.
Martinez set up for a free kick and hit a laser but it sailed too high over
the bar, missing the goal by about five feet.
"It's a rivalry, it's GAC and Buford," Buford head coach Brandon Manders
said. "It's always intense and always physical. When you play a great team
like GAC a man down, eventually you're going to break down somewhere. We
played a lot better than the first time we played here (a 5-1 GAC win) and
maybe we can take some of that momentum with us."
Arthur put GAC up 1-0 in the fifth minute with his 31st goal of the year
only to be answered minutes later when Misael's brother, Abel, scored to tie
it at 1-1.
GAC responded when Arthur assisted Thomas' first goal of the afternoon for a
2-1 lead but Misael Martinez knotted it up at 2-2 midway through the half.
That scored stood until the game's 49th minute when Misael Martinez was
awarded a penalty kick and converted for the 3-2 lead. That lead was good
for the next 16 minutes until the red card gave GAC a decided edge.
Both teams will be at home to open next week's state playoffs with GAC
taking on the fourth seed out of Area 7-AA/A while Buford will play the
third seed.
GAC 3, Providence 2
NORCROSS — Roy Lee started off the game with a beautiful assist to Sean
Arthur and Greater Atlanta Christian never looked back as it topped
Providence 3-2 on Tuesday. Arthur led the Spartans with two goals while
Chris Thomas added another goal. Providence was led by Scott Lilly and Jay
Collins, who both had one goal apiece.

NO. 10-RANKED LADY SPARTANS HEADED TO STATE TOURNAMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME
Jordan leads Providence to region title
By Dan Tomayko, Staff Writer
Apr. 22 Gwinnett Daily Post
LILBURN — In soccer, quality scorers find ways to make the most out of their
chances.
For Providence Christian, Sarah Jordan — Gwinnett County's leading scorer at
44 goals going into the game — scored all four goals in the Stars' 4-0 win
over rival Greater Atlanta Christian to claim their second consecutive
Region 8-AA title on Friday.
"This whole week we've been getting pumped up and focused on just going out
and winning the region title again," Jordan said. "We just wanted to go out
and give it all as a team and everyone chipped in today."
Helping Jordan push her goal total to 48 on the season were Lizzie Hamersly
and Cassie Flowers, who had two assists each.
"We felt we did a pretty good job marking her for most of the game," GAC
head coach Troy Bendickson said. "They actually only had about five or six
quality scoring chances — they just made good on four of them."
The first chance came in the game's 21st minute, as Hamersly found Jordan in
the goal box after the sophomore had slipped behind the defense.
Jordan finished the shot with a low line drive past the keeper to give the
Stars a 1-0 lead.
They added another goal two minutes later as Flowers passed the ball to
Jordan and, after dribbling past a few defenders, she took a sliding shot
past the Spartans' keeper for the 2-0 cushion.
"We've been working hard on keeping the ball low on our finishes and aside
from Sarah's third goal, I think we did a good job of that," Providence head
coach Jonny Williamson said.
The Spartans came out with renewed offensive effort in the second half, but
the Providence defense, spearheaded by some aggressive play by keeper Leigha
Terry, was up to the task.
"We really didn't do anything different in the second half," Bendickson
said. "We just really needed the break after the first half. I'm very proud
of how hard the girls tried even after they were down 2-0 and 3-0 to a team
as good as Providence."
The Stars made it 3-0 in the 47th minute of the game when Hamersly found
Jordan on the right side of the box and she finished her hat trick with a
high shot that skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar en route to the back
of the net.
The final tally came in the 64th minute as Flowers passed the ball to
Jordan, who fought her way through a pack of GAC defenders to put the shot
on goal.
By virtue of making the championship game, both teams will be hosting
first-round playoff games, which will be a first for the Spartans as Friday
marked their first trip to the region finals.
The Gwinnett County schools from Region 8-AA will be well represented in the
state tournament, as Wesleyan and Buford are the other two schools making
the playoffs from the region.
"GAC is a very quality opponent, and someone we know will take all of our
focus to beat," Jordan said. "It gives us a lot of confidence going into the
state tournament winning games like this."
"We know we're going to play either GAC and Wesleyan twice in the year (once
in the regular season and once in the playoffs) and that says a lot for the
quality of play in this area," Williamson said. "It is great preparation for
us for the state playoffs."
Next up for the teams will be the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds from Region 7-AA in the
Class AA/A state playoffs, which begin on Thursday.
GAC 2, Buford 0
BUFORD — Greater Atlanta Christian was led by Sarah Brummett as it defeated
Region 8-AA rival Buford 2-0 on Tuesday.
Brummett scored two goals while Sarah Gwyn and Sammy Abrahart each had one
assist apiece. Gillian Potts recorded the shut out in goal for the
Spartans.
Darsey Gilbreath had 16 saves in goal for the Wolves. [Apr. 19 Post]

TIGHT REGION RACE: SPARTANS PLAY #6-RANKED WESLEYAN ON THURSDAY
This afternoon Buford and Providence Christian play at GACS' Hester Field.
It's a home game for Providence, but the Stars' baseball field/stadium was
damaged during a storm earlier this month. Buford is ranked #1 in Class AA
in a recent coaches' poll.
The stories below are reprinted from the Spartan baseball team's website:

Spartans 9 Banks County 0
Patrick Savage goes yard and Brent Burrows gets the complete game as the
Spartans get region win #10 with a 9-0 shutout of the visiting Banks County
Leopards.
Spartans 6 Buford 1
Spartans get a big win over rival Buford at Hester Field [Tuesday] by a 6-1
score. The contest started a little troublesome for Spartans starter Taylor
Wood as a leadoff hit, a walk and a hit batter had the Wolves threatening in
the first inning with the bases loaded and only one out. But Wood struck out
the next two hitters to get out of the inning with no damage done.
The Wolves would eventually draw first blood, as Corey Allen hit an inside
curveball down the leftfield line for an rbi single in the 3rd inning. The
Spartans would get that run back as an errant pickoff attempt at first base
allowed the first Spartan run.
The game moved to the bottom of the fifth with the score knotted at 1 apiece
as Wood and Buford starter Chase Burnette engaged in a good pitchers duel.
But with two outs and runners at first and third, Patrick Savage delivered
the game winning hit with a blistering ground ball that the Buford third
baseman could not handle to get the run across.
Two batters later, with the bases juiced, sophomore Brent Burrows stepped up
to the plate and delivered a shot down the left field line to score 3 runs.
The Spartans would coast in from there for the big region win. Shortstop
Mark Edwards had a great game at the plate tonight, going 3 for 3 including
a double.
A total team effort by the Spartans as they knock off previously undefeated
region leader Buford.
Taylor Wood went the distance on the hill for GAC, surrendering 5 hits and
striking out 11 Wolves.
Spartans 15 Rabun County 5
Spartans move to 12-6 on the season, 8-4 in region play, with a 15-5 five
inning win at Rabun County yesterday. Dillon Geraghty threw the complete
game for GAC and Landon Bennett got his third home run of the season.
The stories below appeared in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ["AJC"] or
Gwinnett Daily Post ["Post"]:
GAC 9, Banks County 0
NORCROSS — Brent Burrows pitched six innings, striking out nine batters as
GAC downed Banks County 9-0 Friday.
John Wood was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Patrick Savage had
a solo home run and Brock Snead had an RBI and scored two runs for the
Spartans
(14-6, 10-4). [Apr. 22 Post]
GAC 6, Buford 1
NORCROSS — Taylor Wood pitched his best game of the year as he led Greater
Atlanta Christian past Region 8-AA rival Buford 6-1 on Tuesday.
Wood pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits while striking out 11
batters.
Mark Edwards was 3-for-3 with a double and Brent Burrows went 1-for-3 with a
double and three RBIs for the Spartans, who improved their record to 13-6,
9-4 on the season. It was Buford's first region loss of the season. [Apr. 19
