GAC GIRLS GET OUT TO BIG LEAD
By Will Hammock, Sports Editor
Apr. 25 Gwinnett Daily Post

NORCROSS — The Greater Atlanta Christian girls' drive for title No. 5 got
off to a sterling start on Monday afternoon.

The host Spartans qualified seven runners for state, including at least one
in every field event, to build a 43-point lead going into today's running
finals at the Region 8-AA meet.

Seeking their fifth straight region crown, they were led by victories from
Courtney Samuels in the shot put and Annalise Peters in the pole vault. GAC
scored 68 points on Monday, East Hall was in second with 25 and Buford was
third at 24.

"We had somebody qualify in every field event, which is great," GAC head
coach Brad Kinser said. "We're happy. Buford and Dawson are two of the teams
to beat. They're strong, but hopefully we'll be right in there. Hopefully
we'll be in position to battle for it."

Peters and teammate Chanler Phelps gave GAC a 1-2 finish in the pole vault,
with Peters winning at 11 feet even and Phelps vaulting 9 feet. Samuels won
the shot put at 32-8, six inches ahead of runner-up Ebony Jackson of Lumpkin
County.

GAC also got runner-up finishes from freshman Hope Wooster in the discus
(95-6), D'Nay Daniels in the long jump (16-43D4), Vallon Douthit in the
triple jump (33-6) and Toria Strickland in the high jump (4-10). Providence
Christian's Kedal White won the high jump at 5-0.

Buford's Shannon Wilson, a favorite in today's sprints, won the long jump on
Monday at 16-5 1/4.
Only one running final was held on Monday, the 1,600-meter run. Wesleyan's
Kiersten White dominated the field for an easy victory in 5 minutes, 39.13
seconds.

The most excitement in the 1,600 was the battle for second place and a state
berth behind White. Buford's Summer Nelson and Providence's Kara Kreutzer
ran close up until the final lap, when Nelson pulled away to take runner-up
honors comfortably. Nelson's time was 5:42.25 and Kreutzer was third at
5:55.67.
